That C-shaped symbol you sometimes see instead of a time signature is not actually a C for common time. It comes from a broken circle, medieval notation used a full circle for triple time and a half circle for duple time.

A cappella literally means in the style of the chapel. Choirs in old churches sang without instruments because none were allowed inside, and the name stuck long after the rule stopped mattering.

Chopin insisted his metronome markings were only suggestions. He wanted performers to bend the tempo around the phrase, a style called rubato, literally stolen time.

Ledger lines exist because five staff lines are not enough to notate every pitch a piano can play. Add a short line above or below the staff for each note past it, and you can keep going almost indefinitely.

A slur and a tie look identical on the page, a curved line over two notes. The difference is whether the notes are the same pitch. Same pitch means hold it longer. Different pitches means play them smoothly connected.

The first pianos had about 60 keys. Composers kept demanding more range, so piano makers kept adding more, until the modern 88-key keyboard became the standard.

Brahms wrote his Intermezzo Op. 118 No. 2 near the end of his life, and it shows. Less virtuosity, more quiet, aching tenderness. One of the most beloved late-Brahms pieces. Free sheet music: scoretail.com/en/sheet-mu...
