I've never been a fan of Blonde on Blonde. I prefer all of his earlier albums and quite a few of his later ones. But, for me, Nashville Skyline was his first poor album, and Self Portrait was even worse (though Another Self Portrait from the Bootleg Series is much better).

Can you not read? Birmingham City Council is seeking (does not yet have) an injunction relating to unauthorised flags in a specific context: being put on public lamp posts. No one is banned from flying flags from their home. Even the council flies the Union Flag. As you'd know if you lived here.

Well, maybe "force" could seem strong - "control" is better. It's not about merely telling people what to do. It is the intent to control what they do.

I've worked in market analysis. If they are relying on rough estimates of pirating to focus their marketing efforts then they really are amateurs (I am sure they are not)! This discussion, and your weak argumentation, has only convinced me that you are trying to police others' behaviour.

I am sure that numbers of paying subscribers are much more important to them than vaguely-defined "consumer interest" (based on estimated numbers of illegal downloads).

This thread as a whole has certainly reminded me about the new HP TV series - I had forgotten about it. Now, I've spent the past few minutes thinking about the issues around it, so it has much more saliency for me than an hour ago.

Ah there we go: "extrapolate". As I wrote earlier, they can only estimate. I could similarly argue that writing about HP here contributes (also indirectly, just like pirating) to the buzz around the new TV series. Studios can extrapolate numbers of people writing about HP across the Internet.

It is certainly not the TV studios themselves. Besides, if someone downloads via a VPN then then any information that could be gleaned is very general i.e. not very useful to the content creators.

Sure, but they can only estimate the extent of piracy. They cannot track individual downloads and certainly not views.

More correctly, they estimate numbers of pirated copies. That's an important distinction. Piracy as a whole might make a difference. An indivual download of a pirated copy will not.

I really don't see how pirating it helps the creator. This seems like a spurious argument attempting to control people's behaviour rather than a genuine issue, unlike paying for HP products.

The spring 2026 forecast from the EC puts the UK at 0.7% growth for 2026, which is significantly higher than the 0.0% shown in the graph you posted from spring 2025.
