Hebrews 13:6 (NKJV): So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” There is great comfort in knowing that God is our helper. There is great security in knowing that Jesus will help us. There is great love in the Holy Spirit being there with us and for us. It makes me wonder why so often that I still keep saying “I can do it on my own”. I keep wondering why that two-year old in me still keeps popping up his head and stubbornness. Why do I keep wandering around this life thinking that I can handle everything on my own? Why do I keep living a life that pretends it is strong enough to handle everything? Why do I keep living my life thinking that being solo is better than being in community? If the Lord is truly my helper, why do I not let Jesus help me? If the LORD is truly my helper, why do I ignore the presence and promptings of the Holy Spirit? I think some days that I am too stubborn for my own good. I think that I need to more fully learn what it means to trust in the Lord. I need to more fully learn what it means to obey Jesus. I need to more fully learn what it means to let the agape love of Jesus to be my guide and my strength. Today, may we all learn to live more fully in obeying and trusting in Jesus.

Psalm 31:16 (NKJV): Make Your face shine upon Your servant, save me for Your mercies’ sake. I think one of the things that is almost universal is that children want to be seen by the parents. When the child is doing something they like, they want the parent to see what they are doing. The child wants to know that the parent is paying attention to them. I have to confess that in my parenting years, I was not always good at paying attention to my children. There were a lot of times that I let work distract me from what was truly important. I made selfish choices over the years because of what I wanted. I was human. You would have to ask my kids how it affected them. I know I have some regrets of the things I missed that I will never get back. The fact that all three of my kids are fantastic people helps mitigate some of the regret. Today’s verse is a reminder that God never neglects us. God never fails to see us. There is not a time in our lives that God is too busy for us. We are a priority to God. There is not a time in our lives that God is going to say, “oops I missed that, sorry.” The LORD our God is always paying attention to us. The LORD our God is always facing us. The LORD our God is always there for us. Unlike me, God never ignores us for something else. Unlike me, God makes seeing everyone a priority. Today, may we live in the promise of the love that is given to us when the LORD our God faces us and sees us.

Ephesians 4:26-27 (NKJV): “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. The Greek word translated “be angry” means “to provoke or enrage”. It comes from the word that means “desire” with the idea of “violent passion” part of the meaning. That word comes from the word that means “to stretch oneself” which contains the idea of coveting and desire. I have used this verse used to tell people they cannot go to bed if they are still angry at someone. But as I said the other day, anger is an emotion that is natural for us to have. Anger is going to happen. I think today’s verse is much deeper than that. I can be angry at someone or myself and it can dissipate over night after a good sleep. The emotions in our lives come and go. It is when we do not let the emotion go that these issues start to creep into our lives. There are ways to experience anger and then release it. They are not always easy to release, but with the help of the Holy Spirit we can find ways to let love and mercy fill the places that the anger did. It is when we refuse God’s help in our lives, and we start to let the anger dwell in us and fester that things start to become a problem. When we decide to cling to our anger and make it a part of me, we push of the agape love of Jesus from our lives. We try to replace what is supposed to be there with something that separates us from God. When we over-extend ourselves and let our lusts and passions overrun who we were called to be, then we give entrance into our lives the things are supposed to be removed. Today, may we learn to more full trust in the agape love of Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit to make us whole, so that we can live more fully in the mercy and peace of God.

James 1:19-20 (NIV): My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. There have been times in my life that I know I have acted out of my anger. I can draw a direct line between the feeling I was allowing myself to become consumed with and the action that happened. Not once was the action that happened a good one. Not once was the action in any way honoring of God. Not once was the action in any way even concerned about what Jesus would have done. I allowed the emotion of the situation to overcome me. There have been other times that I was not fully aware of the emotion affecting my judgment. But I became aware at a later date that there was an underlying emotion in me that I had been ignoring that was affecting the way I acted and saw things. Anger is a natural response to things. Our emotions were given to us by God. They were designed for specific reasons. I have to be honest; I am still trying to figure out why God allows anger. I have found that anger is unpredictable and can do great damage. I do think anger teaches us a lesson about who we are and how we view the world. So, James's advice to me is a warning to slow down and get to know who we are in Christ Jesus. Slow down and let the Holy Spirit act before we react. Slow down and remember that our faith is in the agape love of Jesus. Slow down and act so that God is glorified. Today, may we learn to more fully live in the agape love of Christ Jesus and less in our reactions to our emotions.

Proverb 4:24 (NKJV): Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you. The Hebrew word that is translated “perverse” is only used this one time. It comes from the word that means “to turn aside”. It contains the meaning of “to depart”. This proverb is a parent trying to teach their child what the best way to live is. It is a teaching that tries to put the LORD our God first in their lives. It is a teaching that tries to remind us that the LORD our God is trying to teach us wisdom. It is a teaching that tries to remind us that the LORD our God cares for us. It is also a reminder that there are certain ways of being that go against the way the LORD our God wants for us. One of the biggest culprits is our mouths and tongues. We have ways of using words that destroy instead of buildup. We have ways of using words as weapons instead of healing. We have ways of using words as division instead of love. When we use the wrong words, we are departing from the way that the LORD wants us to go with God. When we use the wrong words, we turn aside from the love and wholeness that the LORD our God is trying to bring into our lives. When we use the wrong words, we bring division between ourselves and God and between ourselves and others. Today, may we allow the LORD our God to guide our thoughts and words, so that we stay on the path and bring love and peace into the lives around us and into our lives.

Matthew 5:37 (NKJV): But let your “Yes” be “Yes”, and your “No”, “No”. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. In the verses before this, Jesus is talking about swearing on things and taking oaths. Jesus says not to do this. Instead, just do what you said you were going to do. I have always been curious about this over the years. This is one of those parts of Jesus’ teachings that I have wrestled with. This morning the thing that strikes me is that if you swear on something, you are giving yourself a built in out. If you do not do what you said you were going to do, you can blame it on the condition not being correct. Or you can say that what you swore on changed or moved. But if you let your “yes” be “yes”, you remove any excuses. So, when we are dealing with others and with God, we need to be as honest with each other as possible. We need to remove the things from our lives that allow the power of the Holy Spirit to work in our lives. We need to remove the things from our lives that get in the way of our relationship with Jesus. We need to remove the things from our lives that prevent God from being magnified. Jesus wants us to be honest and transparent with Him, with others, and with ourselves. Today, may we learn to live in the power of the love of Christ Jesus, so that we allow our “yes” be a “yes” and our “no” a “no”.

Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV): And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God… The Greek word translated “word” is rhema and not logos. Rhema means “an utterance”. It comes from a word that means “to utter” or “to pour forth”. I have heard plenty of sermons on this topic. Many of them turn these words into actual weapons that are to be used against other people. I have come to believe that Paul was not telling us to take up arms against other people. I think Paul was asking us to transform what it means to a believer in Christ Jesus. In our heads, we need the protection that Jesus gives us, so that we make the right decisions. Most of my life I had made my decisions out of my desires and lusts. I made a bad decision Monday to ignore what my body was telling me, so I have been paying the price all week with lower back pain. I have made even worse decisions over the years that have negatively impacted my relationships with other people and with Jesus. Through it all, Jesus has spoken words of forgiveness and love into my life. Through it all, I have learned to listen for the voice of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. The weapon we are given in the Spirit is to be used against the spiritual forces that try to keep us separate from Jesus and God. They are not weapons that we are supposed to use against other people. We are never called to attack other people. We are called to love other people through the Gospel of Christ Jesus. Today, may we live in the power of the love and mercy that has been given to us and show that love and mercy to others.

Psalm 118:5 (NKJV): I called on the LORD in distress; the LORD answered me and set me in a broad place. “Are you listening to me?” I get asked this question a lot by my wife. Between my ability to tune out the world around me and my hearing aids allowing me to listen to music and videos like headphones, I have the habit of getting lost in my own little world. So, the answer to the question is usually no I was not indeed listening to my wife. I was listening to some reel most likely. She gets back at me by wearing her noise cancelling headphones herself at times. We end up playing this game of who can get the other’s attention. The beautiful thing about the LORD is that God does not play these games with us. God does not put in headphones to tune out the rest of the world. The LORD our God is always listening to us. The LORD our God always hears us when we call. The LORD our God always pays attention to us. We may get good at ignoring each other, but the LORD our God never ignores us. When it comes to the LORD our God, we are heard and seen. When it comes to the LORD our God, we are important. When it comes to the LORD our God, we are a priority. Today, may we live in the promise that the LORD our God does not ignore us but hears us and responds.

Luke 12:2 (NKJV): For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. Over my 60 years of living, I have seen many things come to light that people tried to keep hidden. I have seen myself try to conceal things that could not be keep secret. In all these years, I have watched as the light always overcomes the darkness. It may not happen on the timetable that we want, but the light always overcomes the darkness. It may not happen in the way we want, but the light always overcomes the darkness. The consequences may not live up to what we thought was appropriate, but the light always overcomes the darkness. There are going to be those who try to lead us off the path that Jesus is walking with us. There are going to be distractions to the life that is lived in faith of Jesus. There are going to be those who try to steal us away from our calling. Yet, the Light of the World always overcomes darkness. There is nothing that is trying to stay hidden that will not eventually be uncovered. Jesus is the Light of the world. There is no place that can avoid the Light. There is no place that stay concealed from the Light. Today, may learn to live in the light of Jesus and allow the secrets to be revealed, so that love and healing may abound.

James 4:10 (NKJV): Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Growing up, I really did not do humility. I was raised to think of myself as better than others. I was continually told of how special and wonderful I was. It took me a long time to figure out that being special and wonderful was not something that set me apart from others, but in fact was a sign of the work of Jesus in my life. It took me a long time to realize that the source of any greatness was not because of who I am but because of who Jesus is. I am loved because Jesus loves. I am care for because Jesus cares. I am able to do things because Jesus gives strength. What I learned over the years was that my selfishness was keeping me from a relationship with Jesus. My selfish ambition was getting in the way of me discovering the gifts God had given me. My lack of humility kept the Holy Spirit from fully dwelling in me. I learned that we do need to know that we are special and wonderfully made, but we need to remember to focus on why. The why is not in our own power. The why is found in the forgiveness, love, grace and mercy of Christ Jesus. When we learn to live in the humility that we are reliant on Jesus, we find a life that is not based on us but on the Gospel. We find a life that is built on agape love and not selfish ambition. We find a life that lifts up the name of the Lord. Today, may we all find the way to live in humility and worship the Lord Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 40:29 (NKJV): He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. I read today’s verse and I realize that the focus is on God, not me. We are not told that we are not giving enough of an effort to improve. We are not told that are weakness can be overcome if we just put our back into it. We are not told that we to rely solely on what we can do and accomplish. God is not about shaming us for the things that we do. God knows what we are and are not capable of. God knows our flaws and weaknesses. God knows all this and still loves us. God does not shame us for our weakness; instead, God comes into our lives and strengthens us. God does not condemn us for falling short of our goals; instead, God comes into our lives and gives us love. There are voices around us that we belittle us and condemn us for our failures. God’s voice is not one of them. God’s voice says words of encouragement and promise. God’s voice says words of forgiveness and love. God’s voice says words of joy and wholeness. Today, may we be reminded that the LORD our God is continually there for us with love and strength and may we live in those promises.

Philippians 4:23 (NKJV): The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. The Greek word that is translated “with” means “accompaniment”. As an ending to the letter, today’s verse is a good one. It is a reminder that at the end of the day it is Jesus that is always there with us. It is a reminder that all day that Jesus is there with us. It is a reminder that in morning when we rise that Jesus is there with us. Wherever we are. Whatever we are doing. Jesus is there for us and with us. As we walk the path of life, Jesus accompanies us. When we think we are walking alone in the darkness, Jesus is actually there with us and walking beside us. When we are walking in the light, Jesus is there with us. When we feel at the end of our rope, Jesus is there to give us comfort, love and strength. Today’s verse is a good reminder that the agape love of Christ Jesus is real. It is a reminder that the agape love of Christ Jesus can be relied on. Our hope is built on the agape love of Christ Jesus. Today, me we learn to more fully live in the hope and glory of the love of Jesus.

Ephesians 1:17 (NKJV): …that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him… Paul says that he has heard about the faith of the people and has been in prayer for them. Today’s verse is the first thing he says he has been praying about. I do not personally know any of the people that Paul wrote to, but I can say that I know what it means to need Jesus to bring wisdom into my life. I do know all the unwise decisions that I have made through the years. I know of all the unwise words that I have spoken to others when I should have kept my mouth shut. I know of all the unwise actions I made thinking I was such a smart guy. I have learned over the years that wisdom is not my default mode of operating. My default is far from the glory of the Lord. I have learned that I have to have the Lord Jesus in my life if I want to have any sort of wisdom. I have to have Jesus in my life if I want any sort of knowledge of God. I have to have Jesus in my life if I want any sort of knowledge of the power of the Holy Spirit. Without Jesus in my life, I am lost. Without Jesus in my life, I am separated from God. I praise Jesus that He has come into my life and given me the wisdom and knowledge I need to be the person I was created to be. Today, I need to remember to get out of the way of Jesus and let Him guide me in wisdom and strength to love God and love others.

Psalm 59:16 (NKJV): But I will sing of Your power; yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; for You have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble. The description of this Psalm is that David wrote it after Saul sent men to kill David. David says these men prowled the streets like dogs. That these men howled from not being satisfied that their desires were not being met. David also says the men are transgressors who have not obeyed the LORD. David declares that they are not going to bother him, these transgressors. Instead, David is putting his trust in the LORD our God. Instead, David is going to sing the praises of the LORD our God. Instead, David is going to focus on his relationship with the LORD our God. It makes me think of all the times that I have allowed the things of this world to get between me and God. It reminds me of the times that I have focused on the wrong things and sung the wrong praises to the wrong people. Today’s verse reminds me that the One who should be my focus is the One who redeemed me. Today’s verse reminds me that it is the LORD my God that I should have my faith in. It is the LORD my God that I should be singing to. It is the LORD my God that I should be seeking out in times of trouble. Today, may we all learn to trust in the LORD our God for shelter and strength.

1 Timothy 1:17 (NKJV): Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. When I brought up today’s verse, I was a bit surprised to see that a whole bunch of verses before it was already highlighted. I do not usually highlight that many verses at once. So, it caught my eye immediately, and I went back and read what those verses said. Paul is telling Timothy that he used to be a bad man. As I read that, I understood what Paul was saying. When Paul says that he was the chief of sinners, I know that I can honestly say that about myself too. When Paul confesses that it is only because of the agape love of Christ Jesus that he is alive, I know what he is talking about. I can say the same thing about Jesus: I am only alive because of His agape love. So, for me, today’s verse is something I need to continually remind myself about: who Jesus truly is. Jesus is eternal; He will always be there for me. Jesus is immortal; He will continue to live long after I no longer do. Jesus is invisible; He move and works in ways that we cannot see, but His movements bring forgiveness, love, joy and mercy into our lives. Today, may we start fully living in grace that is fully given to us by Jesus and worship the name of God.
