I don't think I've ever seen a more spectacular example of, "B players hire C players, C players hire D players."

In June and July, we have 24 hour daylight. A five-day Test takes a maximum of 30 hours with no breaks. We should therefore play all Tests in Reykjavík. They will be done in a day. Fixture congestion solved. We could allow seven substitutes if players get tired or cause trouble.

Just so you understand, this is as if you prepared for argument in front of a panel that included Cookie Monster, and Cookie Monster asked you a question about cookies, and you had not thought about cookies in advance.
GORSUCH: Do you think Native Americans are birthright citizens under your test?

SAUER: Ah, I think ... so. I have to think that through.

Absolutely an outlier in the national anthem game.
There are two national anthem types in the world.

France's

And everyone else's

Somehow, specifying “we left with all my children” makes it sound even weirder. Sure, I went to pedophile island with the kids, but I double-counted to make sure I had all them when we left.
VAN HOLLEN: Did you in fact make the visit to Epstein's private island?

LUTNICK: I did have lunch w/ him as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation. My wife was with me as were my 4 children and nannies. We had lunch on the island. That's true. For an hour. We left with all of my children

one of music’s quiet tricks is that you don’t have to speak the language to feel the weight of it.
free jazz figured that out a long time ago.

kind of funny there are prob 1,000 major US musicians and every time conservatives need to put up a music artist to counter a mainstream narrative, they put up kid rock. "ok here's kid rock again" for the next 30 years, an octogenarian man in jean shorts rapping something from the 1990s

Super disappointing to see Nathan Myhrvold in the Epstein files. Seriously, fuck all the way off.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:

In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

There was a time when this sort of delusional idiocy would have made this guy a laughing stock and he would have resigned in shame. Now he is interviewed on national news.
Rep. Randy Fine on his bill to make Greenland the 51st state: "We need to make sure we assert our dominance over the Western Hemisphere ... the last thing we need is Greenland to become another Venezuela where we have huge problems we have to deal with in the future."

Sure, but what if I give you a bag of cash with $50k in it? Do I still need to put myself in the mind of the murderer?
WELKER: What do you see in that video?

HOMAN: I've said from March -- if the hateful rhetoric doesn't decline there's going to be bloodshed. And unfortunately I was right. You gotta put yourself in the mind of the officer.

Q: You guys were out for 2 months during the shutdown. Why has it taken until the end of the year to start addressing these healthcare bills? And what's your message to those who are going to see their premiums rise?

MIKE JOHNSON: We have been working steadily producing ideas trying to address this

Yes, the real problem with air travel is that men don’t wear jackets and ties anymore.
Duffy: "Trump talks about the golden age of transportation. But the golden age in transportation truly begins with you ... People dress up like they're going to bed when they fly ... so we want to push people as we come into a really busy travel season: Help people out, be in a good mood, dress up"

Today is the brief Icelandic language lesson for cricket that you neither needed nor wanted.

"Útilokaður á hlaupum" = run out

Shout it loudly during the upcoming Ashes (at an appropriate juncture). For example, in 2005 a fan could have said: "Útilokaður á hlaupum! Ponting you pratt".

I read The Double Helix as an undergraduate. I was a science major at a women’s college taking molecular biology. Our professor taught us that Watson & Crick screwed Rosalind Franklin over.

So I read the book to learn more. I’ll never forget how reading this passage made me feel.
