This is such an important insight, particularly for people and institutions in DC trying to decide what comes next for immigrant rights, both in the next two years, and beyond….
Trump and Republicans are less popular by the day. Institutions and individuals folding to the Trump administration now are fundamentally misreading reality, not to mention failing in their moral obligations to society.

As someone who went through it, I promise you, it was an occupation. Looked and felt like we were being overtaken. I’m still triggered as are SO many of us. I am changed from it, it was absolute terror.

Lesson learned? Me thinks sadly not.
Most pundits got this wrong. With notable exceptions like @gregsargent.bsky.social. The white flag they waved w/ bad takes (or their silence) emboldened and empowered Miller et al to do real harm. (see eg Laken Riley). Why won't they admit it now? Probably for the same reason. They did harm.
When will the people who argued in April 2025 that Democrats should stay silent on immigration own up to being frankly just disastrously wrong about the politics of mass deportations? Their punditry basically bordered on enablement
