Brilliant @amyremeikis.bsky.social piece here - absolutely gut-wrenching that Nepal PM's speech got buried under the nonsense of AI doom-hype.

My entire life I've heard centrists scolding leftist candidates with "oh, but how will we pay for all that? isn't your agenda unreasonable? shouldn't we run on a modest proposal for means-tested tax rebates?"

Then Mamdani gets elected and makes it all look pretty easy. No wonder they hate him.

these people will happily whitewash and paraphrase unhinged Trump rants to make them seem grammatically coherent and authoritative, but if a young woman says “like” we must keep it in there to make sure you know she’s a bimbo

infuriating actually
“This country has never elected a female president. Why are we pretending that this is not a factor?” Ocasio-Cortez said with a laugh. “That doesn’t make it impossible, but to act as though it’s not a factor in anything ever is really a form of, like, denialism” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/22/u...

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects.

The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)

Dolly Parton's take on AI in 2023:

“I hope nobody can ever replicate me or what I do. AI is a scary thing. I’m sure it’s a good thing for scientists or medical things. But when it comes to trying to duplicate a human being and every little thing they are, it don’t seem right to me. It’s too much.”

Have you considered pushing for amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act in conjunction with the Online Safety Act, to define algorithms of social media platforms to be the equivalent of human oversight such as an Editor? They both curate content. There is a political pathway for that legislation
Algorithms are actively pushing harmful content at young men, and we know it: within 23 minutes of opening a new account, boys are already being fed misogynistic material. But Matt Canavan's answer is to point the finger at the women who teach our young men consent and respect.

This is one of the more disastrous trends of the past decade. It feels like we’re perpetually in that Key & Peele sketch where Key keeps asking “but is it against the law though?” because we’ve lost any other sense of conduct being beyond the pale on general principle…
One of the things we have lost is the power to shame public officials. It seems quaint but it is actually very important. Without it, formal law is significantly weaker and our lives are significantly poorer.

Evidence keeps accumulating that LLMs are a powerfully useful technology for people who already know what they're talking about, and a dangerous outsourcing of cognitive function for people who don't.

This can occur within a single individual, who knows a lot about some things and not about others.
Students who get good grades on homework tend to get good grades on tests.

But a recent study out of China shows a divergence. The old correlation holds for students who didn't use AI on homework, but it's the opposite for those who did.

Using AI = best homework grades, worst test grades
