Anyway 2025 Operas I Saw Ranking:

1. Rigoletto (banger)
2. La Boheme (don’t care about the plot, love the music)
3. Parsifal (weirdly sparse music in a way that really works?)
4. Idomeneo (I get why this isn’t one of the Big Mozarts but it still rules)
5. Dead Man Walking (I wanted to like it!)

seeing conservative men debate how to dress online is very funny. can't dress up or wear interesting casualwear bc you've made any visible interest in dress to be a sign of homosexuality. but you feel the need to dress better bc you've linked dress to respectability. a prison of your own making.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Those arguing for mass-adoption of AI art always seem intent on proving the wrong thing; that AI tech will change beyond all recognition. They seem less inclined to prove their argument's much wilder claim; that human nature, and all previous modes of taste, emotion and investment, will change too.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...

shutting down frat houses won't end rape culture, but it will disorganize a lot of rapists, and i think that's probably worth doing if only to destabilize what is apparently an ecology of organizations that functionally exist to rape women per the whole "purpose of a system is what it does" insight.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

listened to @seraphina.diceexploder.com and @sam.diceexploder.com 's Dice Exploder episode on Triangle Agency and it was incredibly helpful. I sorta think "two people who actually played a game, one of whom liked it and one of whom didn't" might be the ultimate actionable review format?

I have lost count of the number of dates I’ve gone on where I’ve not been asked a single follow up question to a thing I’ve said. The bar is so low.

Last night a man hit on me at a bar and would not take no for an answer. He followed me to the bathroom. And then followed me to my car. The problem with modern dating is not that women see themselves as superior. It’s that women want to be treated like people
— and a lot of me hate that.
Who with any power has encouraged this

Simon Boccanegra at SF Opera was FANTASTIC. Awesome production, orchestra sounded incredible, and the cast was tremendous — especially Eleonora Burrato as Amelia, Christian Van Horn as Fiesco, and The Verdi Baritone Of Our Lifetime Amartuvshin Enkhbat as Boccanegra. Orchestra got great cheers.

Working my way through the Ursula K. LeGuin prize shortlist:

- Slow Gods by Claire North was good! I wish it had been a little weirder. Also I wish it had more gods. But it was memorable and had some tense and exciting moments! Definitely liked it more than Harry August.

Coyote vs Acme was really, genuinely delightful, and so clearly made by people who loved the original cartoons, and by people who cared about the movie they were making. It’s so reassuring to see an IP movie that doesn’t feel like a cash grab. I’m so glad it exists and so glad it got a full release.
