👉Norway, Iceland, Japan, the Faroes: none of these wealthy nations needs whale meat for food. So why does #whaling continue?

🔗 OceanCare's Mark Simmonds reflects on the political motivations that keep whaling alive in these nations:

What's missing? Political will. The fossil fuel era must end. Regional action must begin. Science gave us the roadmap. Policy must act.

2/3 Marine life under severe threat.🐟

What we're losing:

🔹 Corals are already bleaching
🔹 Species are migrating north.
🔹 Food chains are collapsing.

But there's still hope. Staying within 2°C is possible - if countries cut emissions 6% annually from 2030.

🚨 The #Mediterranean is running out of time. New study from OceanCare the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) shows the region's carbon budget will be exhausted by 2035 at current emission rates. The region already passed 1.5°C warming.

#INC 5.2: OceanCare is working on various priorities at the final #PlasticsTreaty negotiations. Downstream we focus on plastic pollution from fishing gear in marine environment. This harmful & deadly form of plastic pollution requires a comprehensive approach to address its devastating impact.

3/3 Without these upstream measures, we're only treating the symptoms while the plastic flood continues to grow. With plastic production potentially tripling by 2060, we cannot afford to miss this opportunity. We need a strong and ambitious Global #PlasticsTreaty now.

4/5 Why this matters:
Large-scale ocean cleanup operations may sound impressive, but they're expensive, often ineffective, and can harm marine #wildlife. Real #remediation means restoring entire marine ecosystems through science-based approaches, not spectacular tech-fixes.
