It's cute, reading all these anguished cries: "when this is all over, these guys need to go to jail!" I remember saying that during Bush I crimes, and during Bush II crimes, and during Trump I crimes.

Guess how many of those guys went to jail.

The Republican Party has fully embraced fascism and destroyed American democracy. But some Democrats still say Latinx. I have never felt more politically homeless.

The Washington Post is embarrassingly out of touch. American voters chose a would-be dictator for president and handed both houses of Congress to fascists. We’ll see how “resilient” our democracy is next year.

Nice story about a great camp near Duluth founded for kids with HIV is for sale. Because there aren't enough kids who need it anymore.

Willow River, Minn., camp One Heartland is for sale after serving kids there for nearly three decades.

This week’s “On-Target” short video by @stevenbeschloss.bsky.social and me looks at Oxford University Press’ phrase of the year, “brain rot,” and how it applies to both Henry David Thoreau and Fox News. Take a look.
The dangers of 'brain rot' in today's America
The phrase of 2024 was coined in 1854 by Thoreau, who wondered why people accept "our dullest perception."

If you were to take every Trump pardon and every Biden pardon and make a single list of them ranked from most corrupt to least corrupt, the pardon of Hunter Biden would not rank in the Top 25.

And of the 25+ ahead of it, all major media and MAGA said at the time was, "The pardon power is absolute."

The letter that Pete Hegseth's mom wrote to him in 2018 is incontestably damning. Moms often have such selectively rosy sentiments toward their sons that we have cliches about it. But Pete was such a monumental shithead to women that his mom could not stay silent. Incredible stuff.

A thread. My favorite movies from each year, starting with:

1916 INTOLERANCE ⭐️⭐️⭐️½
This grandeur of this early mega-epic means there's a lot to recommend it, though I find the overall tone smug and cloying; an early "cancel culture is out of control."

(This is the only film I've seen from 1916.)

Good to see the Times picking up on a theme some of us have been hammering for a while: Trump's tariffs, and especially an opaque exemption process, will be an engine of massive crony capitalism 1/ www.nytimes.com/2024/11/23/u...
Trump’s Trade Agenda Could Benefit Friends and Punish Rivals
Donald Trump has a record of pardoning favored companies from tariffs. Companies are once again lining up to try to influence him.
