Who funds politics matters.

Of the $7.48 million in disclosed election-year donations over $20,000, 73.5% has gone to National, ACT and NZ First.

That is $5.50 million to the three government parties, versus $1.99 million to every other party combined.

A healthy democracy does not require us to agree. It requires us to disagree without abandoning truth, dignity or respect for one another.
Listen carefully. Challenge respectfully.

Democracy belongs to all of us.

Pillars of New Zealand Leadership · Part 3/4

Jacinda Ardern — Humanity as Strength

Our third pillar looks at leadership through some of New Zealand’s most difficult recent moments — including the Christchurch mosque attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tonight’s TVNZ leaders’ debate ended with its undecided studio audience at Hipkins 49%, Luxon 24%, undecided 27%.

But the wider story is bigger than either leader: today’s 1News-Verian poll puts Labour + National at just 57% combined.

MMP is doing what MMP was designed to do.

Tonight, Luxon and Hipkins go head-to-head.

National enters the debate on just 25.9% in today's RNZ–Reid poll. Labour isn't exactly soaring, either.

So tonight isn't just about red versus blue.
It's about whether either major party can convince voters increasingly looking elsewhere.

Pillars of New Zealand Leadership · Part 2/4

Norman Kirk believed leadership was about more than managing the present.

It was about giving people something to hope for — and backing that hope with action, from social policy at home to a more independent New Zealand voice abroad.

Pillars of New Zealand Leadership · Part 1/4

Michael Joseph Savage’s legacy was not simply the creation of institutions.
It was the idea that security could be treated as a right of citizenship, not a privilege reserved for those who could afford it.

The Pillars of New Zealand Leadership.

Four leaders.
Four qualities.

Security.
Hope.
Competence.
Humanity.

Over the coming days, we’ll revisit the SoDANZ series.

Democracy doesn’t require us to agree. It requires us to participate.

You can be frustrated with politics, disappointed by parties, or unconvinced by the choices on offer.

But opting out doesn’t strengthen your voice.

Use it.
