Stefano Boeri’s Vertical Forest (Bosco Verticale) presides in "The "Isola" area ("island" in Italian, owing its name to the fact that it was once encircled by railway lines), designed by Boeri Studio, extending over 31,500 square metres.

Focusing on historic buildings adapted to parliamentary use, the project asks: How do spaces once designed for autocratic rule perform today as institutions of representative democracy?

I look forward to developing this work in Milan and engaging with colleagues there.

The research explores the history and political culture of Italian parliament buildings, the public spaces they inhabit, and their transformation from sites of dynastic and centralised power into democratic assemblies for collective decision-making.

The project, Reinforcing Democracy – Adapting Heritage: Parliamentary Architecture and Public Space in European Historic Contexts, with a focus on Italy, will be developed in collaboration with Associate Professor J.m. Garcia Fuentes.
