New York's higher unemployment isn't its mix of workers. Give every kind of New Yorker, by race, education, age and citizenship, the nation's rate, and the city would sit about level with it. The gap is within groups.

Two million ballots for mayor sounds like a record. As a count it's the most since 1969. Per adult citizen, every presidential race since 1990 drew more, and so did the mayoral race of 1993.

New York's arrivals from abroad are coming from somewhere new. Asia still sends the most, but people who lived in South America or Africa a year earlier went from about a sixth of these arrivals in 2015 to more than a quarter in 2024.

In a presidential year, schooling divides New York's reported voting most. In a governor's race, age does: about 12 points between oldest and youngest with a president on the ballot, 19 in a midterm.

Working from home is a Manhattan habit: 18% of its residents, against 6.7% in the Bronx. Jobs explain part of it, since Bronx residents hold fewer of the jobs that went remote. In the same industries they are home less often too.

$25.43.

That is what the Council bill's $30 minimum wage for 2030 is worth in 2024 dollars, at an assumed rate of inflation. Two in five private-sector workers in the city were paid less than that in 2024.

Fare evasion changes the answer. On paid rides alone, subway grand larceny looks level with 2019 and robbery higher. Count every entry, paid or not, and grand larceny is 13% lower, perhaps by chance, and robbery about the same.
