The resulting inconsistency allows followers to confound intellectual critics, or at least to feel that they have done so, by treating demands for coherence as evidence that the critic simply doesn't understand.

Authoritarians love having an official doctrine, which they can then ignore until it becomes convenient to invoke it. This is a feature, not a bug.
