What a filthy river. But it's beautiful.

Needed a bit of a reset after that, back to Imaizumi Zone. This one was the best kind of "from nowhere to nowhere" movie, a cold but not biting shower of dead end, fundamentally misaligned relationships. Sairi Ito shows up midway through to add another piece to the love triangle; Quruli references 👍

What the blurp omits that said journey involves stealing his late sister's body with his friends and hauling her along in a passerger's seat of a beaten up old car. A worthy addition to venerable genre of "dumb shit happening, everyone is mentally ill and incredibly stylish", I had a blast

A cold, sharp, sad examination of broken vulnerable people slipping, exactly what you come to Hiroki for. A second work recently about grooming, grief, confronting adulthood, individuality, yearning and collaborative creative process, funny how they came from such drastically different places

There are only two anime in the world, they came out in 1979, and everything is downstream of that

Veering into later Aoyama and I'm pleasantly surprised, the typical voyeuristic premise gives way to something more slippery, offbeat and novelistic, a studious exploration of stunted relationships, interpersonal distance and emotional unavailability, while retaining lighter sensibility all the same

Ended with The Youth Killer, the other of Hasegawa's two lone features, pretty good dose of provocative exhausting oedipal nihilism that comparatively falters a bit through no real fault of its own by covering a well trod ground while there's not nearly as many movies like The Man Who Stole The Sun
