Happy International Waterfall Day!

Here's Snoqualmie Falls from earlier this year.

Happy World Environment Day. This year's theme is Climate Action.

We're past the point where awareness is enough. The world is changing. The only question is how we show up to work with it.

Do one thing today in your community or profession. Use your voice. The signals we send back matter. 🌍

Today is the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.

Children are being killed, displaced, and traumatized in conflicts zones and in your peaceful city. They deserve our full moral attention, not just today, but every day until this recognition day is no longer needed.

June is National Rivers Month. Rivers have been the thread running through my career: the Mission Reach in San Antonio and now flood resilience and salmon habitat in the Pacific Northwest.

Different rivers. Same conviction: the work we do for rivers and the work we do for people are the same work.

It’s World Peatlands Day!

Episode 26 of Stories Sustain Us features Jenny Barlow of Tarras Valley Nature Reserve in Scotland where a community raised £6 million to buy 10,500 acres of land and restore it, peatlands and all, for future generations.

It’s World Reef Day! Fritz Newmeyer of Oceans 2050 has been on Stories Sustain Us three times, most recently talking about 3D-printed reef structures deployed at infrastructure scale, financed like real estate. Watch at www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ56... or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Happy World Otter Day!

Today is a day to celebrate the 13 species of otters worldwide and raise crucial awareness about the threats they face, such as habitat loss, pollution, and the illegal pet trade.

May you find someone to love & hold hands with while floating along the ups and downs of life.

Happy World Turtle Day!

The turtle has been my spirit animal since my mom taught me the tortoise and the hare as a philosophy. Later I found the Buddhist Parable of the Blind Turtle, which illustrates the almost incomprehensible rarity of this human life.

Slow and steady. Show up. Be grateful. 🐢

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, I’m recognizing the nearly 20 years working on ecosystem restoration.

What I know now that I didn't at the start: biodiversity isn't just a metric. It's what makes a place feel alive.

That's worth everything. 🌿

It's World Day for Cultural Diversity. I helped the World Heritage designation for the San Antonio Missions — a place where Spanish colonial, Indigenous, and living community histories are inseparably layered.

Cultural diversity doesn't complicate a story. It tells the true one. We need that truth.

Happy World Bee Day!

I spent years on ecosystem restoration projects that brought native wildflowers and grasses back to urban river corridors. After the plants came back, the bees came back.

That's what living systems do when you give them a chance. 🐝

Happy World Fair Play Day!

Soccer taught me this young and I've never unlearned it:
You can win if you play unfairly. But your teammates know. Your opponents know. And you know.

The game is only worth playing if the contest is honest. Everything else is just theft with a scoreboard. ⚽

National Public Works Week. I've spent my career connected to major public works projects — urban river restoration, flood risk reduction, ecosystem recovery — and the thing I know most clearly is this:

The infrastructure is impressive. The people behind it are extraordinary.

Thank you! 🦺

It's Endangered Species Day!

For most of my career, I have worked on flood risk reduction and ecosystem restoration.

Healthy floodplains mean cooler water, better habitat, and a fighting chance for fish species, like the endangered salmon, which have shaped the PNW region for thousands of years.

National Get Caught Reading Month. Consider me caught.

Reading every day. Already finished The Other Side of Change, Strong Ground, and The Surfer and the Sage. Currently deep in Born to Flourish.

It's how I learn, grow, and keep my brain working at its best.

What are you reading right now? 📚

International Day of Plant Health. I am proud to have worked on projects that restore native plant communities to river ecosystems, including the Mission Reach in San Antonio, one of the largest urban riparian restoration projects in the US.

Healthy plants bring back birds, fish, and community.

Happy Mother's Day to my mom and all the soccer moms who helped raise me, and to the fur baby mom's too. Yay for moms!!!

Happy World Migratory Bird Day!

I spent years helping protect freshwater flows into San Antonio Bay, unglamorous, essential work, partly because Whooping Cranes, the tallest birds in North America, winter there.

The chain between water policy and a living species is shorter than most people think.

It's Historic Preservation Month!

While reconstructing San Pedro Creek in San Antonio, crews found something unexpected: the foundations of the city's first AME church, dating to 1867.

I was proud to be connected to the work that followed, honoring that history instead of paving over it again.

May is National Wildfire Awareness Month.

Wildfire "seasons" are longer, the fires hotter, the communities at risk broader than anyone predicted a generation ago.

Awareness matters. So does honesty about what's driving this.

Pay attention. Then do something with it. 🔥

Public Service Recognition Week. Real talk: the people doing this work right now, career civil servants, program staff, field crews, are navigating a political climate actively hostile to their existence.

They show up anyway. Because the work is real and the stakes are real.

#thankyou

Happy Cinco de Mayo from someone who spent most of his life in San Antonio and has been chasing that city's Mexican food ever since moving to the Pacific Northwest.

Some things you can't replicate. You just appreciate them more from a distance.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo. 🌮🎉

May the 4th Be With You!

Original trilogy forever. Andor is the best thing Star Wars has done in decades. Han shot first.

These are my hills and I will die on all of them. 🚀

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The most important thing we can do is make it easier for people to tell the truth about how they're actually doing. Everyone is carrying something. Normalize the conversation. Ask. Listen. Reach out if you need help. You were never supposed to carry it alone. 💙

May is AAPI Heritage Month!

A reminder that Asian American and Pacific Islander communities represent some of the most extraordinary cultural diversity, creativity, and resilience in American life.

Grateful for every AAPI voice making our collective story richer and truer. 🌺
