All about one early stage startup’s journey.
“We need it for protection of the world, not just the United States.” As though this is credible. #Greenland

A recent article in Bloomberg suggests that, in the US, the middle class is getting poorer but the rich are spending more and thus the economy is going well.

In many places, deep respect for certain figures leads to intense reactions when they are disparaged. These responses often defend not just the figure, but a shared community identity and honor—revealing universal patterns of defending what people hold sacred while balancing freedom of expression.

On AI: China urges cooperation, open source, and restraint while the USA urges cowboy style, profit (for a few) oriented, closed source innovation. China is developing its own chips, GPU’s, CUDA-substitute, and LLM’s … and I’m finding that a good thing? I’m agreeing with Elon Musk? A strange world.

Trump requires AI firms to prove they are not biased towards “woke”, but allows Grok, which is explicitly right wing. One more reason to encourage geopolitical diversity in AI, such as Mistral, developed in France.

“To survive, a civilisation needs a certain amount of forward movement. But not as much as it needs to keep up basic standards.”

This was written by Janan Ganesh in an article for the FT. His subject is art, but his argument so clearly applies more generally.

Change in our #startup: after underperforming, the partner responsible for sales is basically bowing out, so we are speaking with others to see the way forward. Actually the signs were there months ago.

One lesson:

1. If a partner promises but doesn’t deliver, ever, it could be time to move on.

Fascinating story by Martin Wolf from the FT:

Playing ‘whack-a-mole’ with Meta over my fraudulent avatars
How is it possible that a company with such huge resources, including artificial intelligence tools, cannot deal with this?

What if Trump really meant it when he said it was the last time Americans had to vote?

In the US and EU, replacing Chinese production with local robotics actually makes sense, especially for sensitive industries.

Replacing Chinese workers with local workers isn’t really going anywhere though.

Our product fits in, and probably requires a change of, a client’s workflow. As such it requires a decision on their part.

I’m encouraging the team to think of a “light” version which would be more a subscription product with lower barriers to adoption, to get some engagement.

Hard!

Getting our first client is a long process.

We have meetings, but whereas we would like things to happen *now*, prospective clients have their own agenda and are fine with postponing meetings.

We have to hope the first customer is around the corner…

A quote from Bloomberg Weekend Edition.

“If AI agents increasingly do research for journalists … and businesses, then academics, policy wonks and activists may join marketers in the race to influence what those agents think and say.”

First they ruined the internet. Now they’re trying to ruin #AI.

Interesting fact: at conception everyone is a woman. Différenciation occurs later.

So in the US, everyone is a now woman because that is their sex at conception.

Some skepticism and perspective would be a good idea when looking at deepseek. For one thing regarding their backstory.

Their pricing means little because the data they are getting is far more important to them.

The fact they are open source is, however, a huge step.

One of the original four co-founders has not delivered on anything he promised to take on.

Now we are wasting our time discussing what to do with him, in spite of the fact that we pretty much know what we have to do.

So I ask chatgpt for a beautiful complicated prime number greater than 1 million.

It proposed 1003001.

Now tell me it doesn’t have class.

First client meeting I attended yesterday. There have been a couple of others I didn’t attend. Sales promising things that will take some time to develop 😂

In a startup it’s a strong recommendation to agree beforehand on why and how to part ways with a co-founder. We are going through this right now.

Interesting is that we three have different reasons for doing so.

A friend of mine insists you should be polite with LLM’s: hopefully they will remember when they take over the world.

Following Facebook: what if Google started giving us only government approved right wing content, and OpenAI only government approved responses?
January 8, 2025 at 7:18 AM
We have been far too polite with each other in the startup. The result is that we are moving slowly. We’ve finally agreed to take the gloves off and just get things done.
