It's a silly psychological hangup, but it's really limiting my use of it. Whenever I have a thought, I figure "well my phone is in my pocket, I'll take it out and record it there and save the ring".

If there were a rechargeable version, if definitely get that instead, just to not have this fear.

I'm confused about this, don't you authenticate satellite images somehow? How does that work, does someone send a satellite image showing something and it gets treated as valid evidence? I'd expect that the images came from verified sources, not random Internet Joes?

I think Ryan has a point, "either on device or in Meta's cloud" is a false dichotomy. It could be on your own computer at home, it could be a cloud you trust, it could be *something*. Those aren't the only two choices.
