This is a strain of thought I’ve seen many times over the years: the idea that if we conceive of trans men as a gender-oppressed minority, it means we’re not gendering them as male.

This is flattening, idealistic nominalism. It does not mean that. You can be male and oppressed by male supremacy.

It’s disingenuous to insist the sexual and reproductive oppression of trans men isn’t situated in the same system that reproduces misogyny. It’s disingenuous to insist that analysis like this only works if we construct trans men as half-women or “men lite.”

A trans man in the UK has been banned in the workplace restrooms after he was forced to use the women's restrooms to comply with the new EHRC guidance. The women complained because he is visibly male and so they told him he can't use any bathroom.

The post text reads: "Brother in law is trans FtM and presents fully as a man. He's now facing an impossible situation at work with his employer telling him that due to recent legislation he must use the toilet of his birth gender. BUT several female colleagues have raised a grievance about him using their gendered toilet. His employer has told him that he cannot use the toilet while he is at work until they sort it out and cannot give him a timeframe to do so. They do [cut off] have disabled separate toilets. In the mean time one of his female colleagues has accused him of sexual harassment because he was used their gendered toilet. His menstrual cycle meant he needed to use the toilet. He's been with the employer for just over 5 years but only in this location for 18 months. The location is mainly male with just a handful of females, and his workshop only has male toilets. Girls and boys are raised in specific ways for specific purposes, so it does not make sense to raise boys as girls. Why not raise every girl as a boy? Because if a girl does not exist among boys, then the girl is made. Q. Why not raise girls and boys as themselves? The self must be made in a world where girls and boys can first and foremost be themselves. One step towards this goal is to raise every boy as a girl. Q. The way people raise girls is cruel, so why would you raise boys with that cruelty? If you raise girls with cruelty, then you should stop being cruel to girls.

Does this mean that "transmen" should use the ladies'? This is a longstanding rhetorical argument known as the "transman gotcha". The argument goes that there are women who identify as men who have taken testosterone for an extended period, and who look and sound convincingly like men (for example with beards, male musculature and a deep voice). Jamie is a trans man, & was assigned female at birth... the configuration of his pelvic anatomy are none of my nor your business... should he be using the women's bathroom? yes? or no? ••? Is the Supreme Court forcing a person who has taken extreme steps to look like a man to use the ladies' toilets or saying that they have a right to? The answer is no. Women who look convincingly like men and who go into the women's toilets are likely to be just as alarming to women as actual men. They would have to explain themselves, providing personal information that they might not want to share (and that other people might not want to know). Therefore it may not be practically possible for some trans-identifying women to use the ladies' toilets. The Supreme Court says that it is lawful to exclude them (at paragraph 221): "Women living in the male gender could also be excluded [from a women's service] under paragraph 28 without this amounting to gender reassignment discrimination. This might be considered proportionate where reasonable objection is taken to their presence, for example, because the gender reassignment process has given them a masculine appearance or attributes to which reasonable objection might be taken in the context of the women-only service being provided."
