Different kind of innings but Razaullah’s wonderful exhibition at number 9 reminded me of Asif Iqbal’s rearguard, also at 9, at The Oval 49 years ago when he scored 146 to keep Pakistan in the match. And what a career he went on to enjoy.

Probably, it’s just me but I struggle to understand what dear Alastair Cook is talking about at the cricket. Silly old git I am no doubt but he might do well to listen to the summaries of another Essex old boy, Trevor Bailey: concise, articulate, erudite

Sorry, off the pace a bit as usual. Have the USA been reinstated in the FIFA World Cup yet?

If this new chap Andy Burnham is as big on the north as he says perhaps he can ensure there is an Ashes Test played here next year. Disgracefully, the ECB decided to stage all of them in the south or midlands. Shouldn’t happen.

Ireland beating India shows cricket’s wonder. Now, England to beat India anyone? Less likely

In other news superb wins for Ireland v India (ODI) and WI v SL (Test). Bet Vooryanshi plays in Durham on Wednesday.

What a shame. What a cricketer. Say it ain’t so Ben

Different world of course but the feeling is that he’s more Paisley than Shankly.
My theory about Arne Slot is that he's recognised the individual ability of these Liverpool players on the ball - and given them more chance to think and play.

Which is not to disparage Klopp's great work.
They were probably just ready to switch from high intensity running to a more crafted style.

Yes, it seems to me a huge concern @anniechave that this may turn to be a one-off payment and that annual fee payment will virtually stop.
Total valuation for The 100 - 975m. Non host counties get 27m from proposal. Original share of the competition was 1/19th of 90% which is 46m.
What assurances have they had on future distributions?
It’s welcome money but what revenue will they get if they lose the blast & their cc matches are cut?

Disappointing effort by England to lose the Ashes in Sydney. Often poor bowling, inept fielding, soft cricket. Oz superb. If this was the men there’d be calls to bring ‘em home.

A striking summer: when the 1926 Ashes series united a divided nation. A flavour from The Guardian

I am moving here from twitter which is a bit alarming lately. It’ll be the same stuff about cricket issues that matter to me, sometimes at random, occasional other stuff - oh, sorry, and my new book A Striking Summer from Fairfield Books about how the 1926 Ashes series helped save the nation

It was lovely to speak to the Scottish Cricket Society in Glasgow and Edinburgh about my book A Striking Summer which tells how the 1926 Ashes series united a divided country on the verge of revolution. Oz played 4 matches in Scotland that year. And they were all bowling 23 overs an hour. Imagine!
