Semester is starting up, I’m going through some things, & after having my 1st baby 2 years ago, I’ve been struggling to get back to posting regularly-ish/writing more/doing some Substack stuff to stay involved in the lit community. Any tips? Perspectives? Writing/life advice for balance?

Form rejections on my short stories have been hitting me hard lately. Please tell me the lack of enthusiasm about my fiction from top lit mags is not a microcosm for how it’ll go when I’m querying my novel? 😭

Of course the little desk lamp I’m in love with is $265.00

Honestly starting to like getting up early during my summers off because even if I bullshit around for 3-4 hours, I’ll still have most of the day ahead of me to write.

My new PCP’s name is Dr. Graves, and I feel like I’m in a Lemony Snicket novel.

Nooooooo. I’d like to forget this, thanks.

We just got the call that our daughter and 3 of her classmates have explosive diarrhea, and they need to get a new rug in the classroom.

Forcing myself to start working out consistently again, now that my baby is almost 2 years old and in daycare 😭

All right universe, in less than 24 hours, you gave me 3 form rejections from lit mags I had my heart set on, but also gave me 3 Substack subscribers. What are you getting at?
July 15, 2026 at 5:45 PM
Oof, I just got 3 form rejections back to back 👌
Got stung by a wasp while writing my first Substack post in my Writing Ughpdate series about gamifying my short story submissions. If that’s not a metaphor for the sting of rejection, I’m not sure what is.

My novel-writing mantra lately:

It sucks, and that’s okay!
It sucks, and that’s okay!
It sucks and that’s okay!

For the Missouri Review, I interviewed Rufi Thorpe about MARGO'S GOT MONEY TROUBLES & her experience as an executive producer on the TV adaptation. We also talk Onlyfans, breaking out on a later novel, & being told by an MFA prof that she'd "never be a writer.” missourireview.com/a-conversati...

Overheard in the airport bathroom:

Mom: “What did you watch on the plane?”
Little Girl: “Sleeping Beauty!”
Mom: “Was it scary?”
Little Girl: “No, mom! It wasn’t scary. It was surprising.”

HAIL SATAN? is truly a great American documentary to watch on Fourth of July weekend about the fight to uphold separation of church and state!

Robbie Robertson takes a load off, Fanny, a band of satirical Satanists rally, and an LGBTQ+ icon tells her fabulous story.

Real talk: Are editors and agents ACTUALLY throwing pieces out if they see em dashes or oxford commas? Or are we real writers fear mongering ourselves into existential crisis?

I’m fine with this—“you do you”—as long as the publishing industry doesn’t get duped and publish these “books,” as most will have secretly been AI-written, AI-stolen.

Sarah Moss: Some students believe they can be writers without reading. This raises questions for me
Wanting to write without wanting to read is, at best, trying to skip the first stage of an artistic apprenticeship

Currently on the hunt for classic, modern classic, and contemporary literary book recs that do 3rd person limited extremely well! Bonus if it’s rotating 3rd person limited! Helppp. I feel like everything is first person these days.

I despise RFK Jr. and his ilk. They’ve got my dad—who has high cholesterol and a stent—loading up on steak and bacon, and shunning fruits, vegetables, and nuts as “poison.” You can’t tell me that they don’t want people to die.

Why are right-wingers afraid of eating vegetables?
Have you noticed a recent, aggressive increase in pro-meat and dairy rhetoric? What started in somewhat fringe internet circles — such as the ‘carnivore diet’ community, championed by peculiar charact...
