Math + History = answer to how $1k becomes $6k. ON AVERAGE, the Dow Jones advances 10% every year, including crashes in '29 and '08. A portfolio can double in value every 7 years at 10%. Two concerns: A crash just before you plan to use the funds, plus any inflation eats up some gains.
