In 1180, Henry II wanted to thank the monks of The Virgin Mary & St. Andrew in Thetford for their hospitality. But what to get the abbot who has everything?

Eels. Lots of eels.

The grateful king donated the annual eel-rents from local fisheries, for a total of 12,775 eels.

Meme. Scene from the movie "Rounders" showing John Malkovich's character, Teddy KGB, standing with his hands on his hips. He is wearing a red track suit jacket with twin stripes running down the arms, & a button-up shirt that with a design that looks like it's made from newspaper clippings. He had a strong beard game going, and the light is glinting from his forehead in more-than-oriental splendor. He is standing in what looks a bit like somebody's grandmother's apartment. In the film, it's an underground gambling den. But it could also be Grandma's living room. Is she over in the corner, filling out a crossword, or pretending to watch the golf channel while she semi-secretly looks at softcore porn on the internet? Could be! The stare that Teddy is giving you is immense. It hits you like an iceberg made of egg whites, and leaves you to sink in an ocean of self-loathing. It's the look of a disappointed rival, who expected much better. Meme text reads: "Pay him. Pay that monk his eels."

It's January 23, & you want to know, don't you? You want to know which historical figure bought eels on this date. Of course you do.

It was Cardinal Wolsey! In 1525, his kitchen account books show an expenditure of 16d. for "eels to roast."

There you are. Now go enjoy your day!
🗃️🧪
Meme. Painting of Cardinal Wolsey by Sampson Strong from the late 15th C. The cardinal is dressed in his carinal-colored carinal clothes, and his pointy hat. He is looking to your left, and there's no indication that he even knows you're here. His neck and chin look fat; he is very jowly, like he's trying out for the part of the bulldog in the Christmas pageant. Wolsey is pointing with two fingers. He might be blessing someone, or he might be indicating that he wants two eels. It's impossible to tell from the way I've clipped the image. Not for nothing, but "Sampson Strong" is a wonderful name, and I like to think that it's a descriptive title. Adjectival Nominalism. He's not just strong, friends. He's Sampson Strong. The meme text reads: "'Roast me some eels' The original cardinal direction"
