I train in hakama & if we're moving much you kilt those suckers up for the same reason—otherwise it's like stepping on the hem of those stupidly-wide pants from the '90s. Trip hazard.

I mean, it's an aesthetic preference, but I still prefer a monochromatic gradient if there's no meaning to the divergence.
More particularly, though, white on a topo map makes me think snow, not "somewhere on the middle of the hill."

It could be useful if your "central" elevation was something you're using for comparison—like the elevation of a spill point in a watershed, or sea/flood level. Otherwise I do feel it gets a bit busy.

I checked Des Moines & Davenport, and one was a degree above the average while the other was a degree below. So I figure it, er, averages out!

And it's not long ago most kids didn't have homework, or at least it was little enough they could do it in study hall. My dad was baffled at the piles of homework I had, more so after he found out I did in fact work on it during study hall!

There's always the option, when you live on a dairy farm, to go hug a cow until you're warm enough to think.

I've been that cold, but at some point "cold makes you stupid" had seeped through my skull so I don't use sharp objects if I can't feel my fingers.
Bad enough the bruises I didn't notice until later.

I have cut a lot of firewood, even with a gas chainsaw & a tractor it's so much work. Electric or gas heat, so much nicer.
