I read Roots when I was 8. Yes, it had adult content, but most of all, it informed me to understand how badly the US treated slaves and how necessary it was for me to do better as a citizen in the US. Oh, and to answer your question--it was a book in my grandmother's library, not a public one.
When the state is disenfranchising its Black voters, there's zero question why ROOTS was just banned in Knox County, Tennessee, schools.
