My sister died suddenly. Her funeral is Monday. We just got 4 of her 7 kids — they came with nothing. I’m turning my garage and my dad’s basement into a home while grieving and planning 2 funerals.

this is a nicely put distinction. come to think of it, this distinction applies to the data vs vibes or emperical vs interpretive category in general (science, tech, medicine vs philosophy, psychology, religion etc).
another way to say that is the central question of engineering is "how are we going to get this damn thing to work at all?" while design's is more like "given that there are many ways to get this outcome, which one do we do?"
