The TCT has a long and distinguished history of excellent conservation outcomes in Tasmania. Since 1968 we have worked to preserve and conserve all native wildlife and their habitat on all of Tasmania's land mass and its surrounding waters.

The TCT has been campaigning for a climate act that promotes climate action. As it stands, Tasmania may lose our 'Net Zero' status by 2030, as forests have done all they can to sequester climate pollution from all other sectors. This is why we are calling on sector-based pollution reduction targets
The Mercury newspaper article 13 Aug 2026: Climate Claims in Doubt: Tasmania's new climate change minister continues to spruik the state's 'net zero' status, despite an independent report highlighting 'doubt' that Tasmania's net-zero achievement represented a real transition rather than a "temporary accounting outcome from negative land-use emissions". The independent Review of the Climate Change (State Action) Act 2008 report was tabled in parliament on Wednesday and saw the state accept two of its recommendations, while the other five it supported in principle. Jo Richards, climate campaigner at the Tasmanian Conservation Trust said it was a "serious concern" that the minister's response to the review did not acknowledge the report's findings that Tasmania was at risk of losing its net zero status. "We can no longer use our forests as an excuse to continue emitting, we need strong action and sectorial targets on reducing emissions in other sectors,"Ms Richards said. She said Climate Change Minister Guy Barnett did not address the review report's recommendation of sectorial targets, which meant targets to reduce emissions in each sector outside of forestry use, including transport, agriculture, waste, industry and energy. The report found there was "low confidence and real risks in implementation" on climate action, noting that excluding forestry offsets, Tasmania's emissions actually increased between 1990 and 2023. In response, Mr Barnett said Tasmania had "proudly maintained its net zero status since 2014". He said the report showed the Climate Change Act was a "strong foundation for ongoing climate change action" and an "effective framework for Tasmania's climate response". The report said that state needed to move from planning to delivery, "focusing resources on outcomes rather than process." "While the Tasmanian government can show that plans have been developed, it cannot yet demonstrate whether proposed actions are making a measurable difference.."..
