As one example: a grant that I submitted beginning of June, 2025 wasn’t reviewed until last week. It received a decent score during scientific review but it is entirely unclear what happens from here, who will decide its fate and based on what criteria beyond the score. 🔹 The journal Science analyzed OPM data: Federal agencies lost 10,109 STEM/health Ph.D.s in 2025; at 14 research agencies, departures outnumbered hires 11-to-1. That's 14% of the total number of Ph.D.s in STEM! 🔹NIH was the hardest-hit agency in that analysis: “more than 1,100” STEM/health Ph.D. departures in 2025 vs 421 in 2024. Normally departures are offset by hires 🔹NIH (Nov. 21, 2025): NIH will no longer rely on paylines; Institutes/Centers must weigh peer review “in its entirety” alongside priorities, workforce sustainability, and geographic distribution raising concern about inconsistent or politicized decisions if criteria aren’t transparent. 📱Senators: 1️⃣Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m calling from [ZIP], Alabama.
