However, what could happen with an R win - other existing rights could start being gutted. So, yeah - it sucks to vote for a centrist D but guess what - it’ll suck even more if an extremist R wins.

people have been convinced that every institution is a retail institution, at root, and that the job of institutions is to satisfy and delight the user.
This is so well put. People treat institutions like retailers. They think the can vent or boycott or demand changes that don't involve any personal commitment from themselves. And they think if they change their mind, or realize it was just a dumb phase, that institutions will simply adapt to them.
wrote about this last year and sure I wasn't in any way the only one but imo people voting for populist politics in the 21st century *is* a sign that they do just have too much faith in institutions, as opposed to not enough - they want to have their little tantrum but assume things will just hold

Right. Brown just didn’t get the turnout. And he’s not running a vastly different campaign this time, at least from what I’m seeing. And Acton’s not doing much to help turnout younger folks either.

A few years ago, that may have been possible, but the way Ohio is now, I’m not so sure. Especially with Brown’s mostly centrist approach, he’s not going to pull in a lot of younger folks who’d vote blue.
