Colchester wild fun today: around the Meanwhile garden, Toadflax Brocade caterpillar and the tiny groundbug Nysius huttoni; a Hummer resting on the Minories folly; and in Castle Park, under a Lawson's Cypress an Orsillus depresses bug dropped on us. Both bugs new to us.

Greater Knapweed, Centaurea scabiosa. Usually up to 90cm. Stems branched. Leaves hairy, up to 25cm long and deeply divided apart from uppermost ones. Pale bracts with black-brown, fringed top border. Solitary, terminal flower heads, up to 6cm with enlarged outer florets
