So, in halcyon days of Oct 2024 @ninapija.com did a fun inktober series, during which we discussed how goofy & over the top the uniforms of Verhoeven's Starship Troopers was referencing the Wehrmacht. Recent news has reminded me about that conversation...

"Odyssey's set design is dimly lit! The Gods never appear! The costumes are so forgettable!"

I have concluded that the people long for a return to Sword-&-Sandal epics. I have begun a katabasis to consult with Ray Harryhausen, Kirk Douglas & Cecil DeMille. BRB. Pizza money's on the coffee table.

Hearing a defense of Neo-Mercantilism was not on my @historyofvenicepod.bsky.social bingo card! Very interesting to learn more about the modern day Venetian glass industry and its current market troubles though. Thanks for the fun episode!

Putting my 2 cents out there regarding the costume design of the latest Odyssey movie: I don't speak for everyone, but when I tell people "I wish the costumes were bronze age" what I mean is that I would love to see more creativity in films set in the past. 1/4

You know, I was just thinking the other day about how Alan Grant’s voice lines form an almost daily part of the words I think. So many good bits of wisdom in the greatest movie of all time.

You’ll always be treasured, Sam Neill.

I feel like there's an unspoken rule that once a discord/subreddit reaches a certain size you're required to have at least one regular who's a decent fellow, but absolutely cannot detect sarcasm/irony and whose comments are dripping with annoyance over small inaccuracies. Anyone else notice this?

How to start a conversation with a short phage:
❌ Wrong
✔ Correct
Scientists are actively researching ways to make phage therapies more effective. This includes efforts to engineer phages to expand their host range and aid in bacterial defense system evasion.

I'm actually really excited that this panel will act as a time capsule. By picking the one dinosaur near-guaranteed to have its body reimagined in a decade or so, this panel will be a reminder of what the paleo community of the (Ibrahim et. al. 2020) era imagined the Spinosaurus looked like.
Amazing panel in the new DanDaDan Chapter.

The wake-up message this morning on Artemis II was from Jim Lovell, who recorded it before passing away in August of last year.

Lovell looped the Moon twice in Apollo 8 (1968) and Apollo 13 (1970), truly a pioneer of spaceflight. We salute a real one. 🫡

Tomorrow, if all goes well, Artemis II will complete something that hasn't happened in over 5 decades. For many this will be a first in our lifetimes. In the last few days I've been thinking a lot about the unanimous joy Artemis' journey has brought to the world. 1/4

You know those memes where women point out hating pink/girliness as a tomboy child but totally 180ing as an adult?

I think my equivalent is fixating on classical art movements. They're still great but boy howdy do I now appreciate other mediums that aren't afraid to stray from Greco-Roman forms.
