“Chinga la migra, which for the non-Spanish speakers in the audience, means ‘we find ICE’s activities to be problematic’”
Congratulations to @lookitup.baby for being the first person I've heard say "chinga la migra" on stage at a tech conference 🔥🔥🔥

For reasons known only to myself, I have created a single web page with links to privately hosted copies of a whole bunch of documents related to police oversight and reform in Somerville.

It is frustrating trying to be an honest, considerate, hardworking person, when many signs indicate it is much more lucrative right now to be a liar and a grifter with no moral core or ethical framework for daily life. I just hope these people eventually get what they deserve.

Hello from a ~12yr old Macbook Pro, though it's not running MacOS. Still does everything I need - 6hrs of battery, browser apps, development, screen recording at 1080 without dropped frames.

You don't need new hardware every 1-5 years. You are lazy and purchasing things makes you feel good. Why?

Here's how to deal with incompetent AI chatbots; a live example, taken from my recent chat with Ally's bot:

Bot: "I got my wires crossed. Can you try asking me in a different way?"

Me: "No"

Bot: "I'll pass the chat to a human associate who can help you."

This is the way.

When's the last time you left your phone at home? Went on a relaxed walk? Or just like, sat under a tree for a while?

Go do that

Quite happily running #FreeBSD 15.0 on my 2015 Macbook Pro

Don't get me wrong, Discord in Firefox definitely feels like I'm on a decade+ old machine. Audio from Pandora never skips though, and Bluesky feels smooth to me most of the time. DWM and Kitty run more than well enough with picom.

“Imminent.” You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Don't let anyone scare you from running your own email server.

Is it work to set up and maintain? Yes.

It's nowhere near the doom and gloom hassle I've heard others purport though. Most of the effort is front loaded.

If you feel motivated to do it, and you understand the upkeep needed, go for it.

Slop is the perfect word to describe the low-quality, high-volume, AI-generated content being thrown around.

If you don't have time to write it, I don't have time to read it.

Important heads up: The feds have -publicly- subpoenaed Google, Reddit, Discord, and Meta for information (names, phone numbers, email addresses) associated with accounts that are either critical of ICE or that are tracking ICE activities.

Re-posting this because I saw a headline today where some tech oligarch was bloviating about whether the chatbots are conscious or not.

Wrong question. The correct question is ‘why do we need tech oligarchs?’
We will be told, and very soon, that somebody has created General AI - a superhuman intelligence.

Whoever made the thing will also say some version of:

(a) It's a very secret sort of god
(b) They're the only ones that god will talk to.
(b) God says to let them fuck us. Seriously.

Don't.

I feel like a lot of automations folks are doing with agents can probably be done mostly by shell scripts in a more deterministic fashion. Maybe just use a LLM for some categorization, instead of to do the whole thing.

I'm still writing code the hard way. I'm slow. I like to think critically about every line of code and fiddle with variable names until everything looks right. I treat code as a liability and try to ship only what's necessary.

It's hard to imagine writing code any other way.

I know this is the wrong crowd for this but, I have an important test that I apply to new technologies that people think are going to fix everything. I ask "how does this help with the housing crisis?"

Invariably (so far) it does not.
