it costs the company more to put aside space for donation people to come in and pick this stuff up and it costs them more to refrigerate it for a little while longer for people to come in and pick up free food. Its cheaper for them to just throw it all away.

Ok I have an awesome idea for a game that no one has done before! A 4 player co-op survival game where you go to a spooky place and find stuff to sell so you can by stuff for the place you all live and if you dont find enough stuff you all die and the whole time your being hunted by monsters!
