Returning from Lopez, we traveled much faster than usual past fog-shrouded islands. My imagination put us squarely in season one episode one of a new series, racing against an apocalypse that had already overtaken islands we passed.

The result was sitting on the ferry at the Friday Harbor tie-up slip for more than 45 minutes until we were underway. Of course, that just gave us more knitting time. Stops at Orcas, Shaw, and Lopez islands seemed shorter, and a couple of times the ferry’s approach was just… different.

The second was a widespread disruption of ferry service, which completely cut off travel between the four islands of San Juan County and the mainland. I seldom leave the island, but it was unsettling nonetheless.

work cut out for me.

The bag itself is in decent shape. The leather could use some tlc and the strap has stretched in 30 years, but I rarely leave the house without it.

rough side of the strap is damp or wet, the leather transfers dye to whatever it touches. I knit this utilitarian sleeve in acrylic yarn to protect my clothes, which it's done for years. It's drab, though, and not as long as I would like. The new strap sleeve will be at least 40 inches, so I have my

Sadly, ankle-high sock season is shorter here on the island, so I wear my 100+ pairs less. I’m knitting a lot of short socks, though. 😀

This is the fourth of four sizes (one size sock patterns are annoying) so as you can imagine the pattern will take time.

I do this with my knitting - stand it upright until it topples 😋 Long ago I knit a much more utilitarian version of a cover/sleeve in the same stitch. This one is so much more visually appealing 😀

And why not include the three completed samples for reference. Call the yarn I chose for the smallest sample size 4. The finished samples are size 2 (top), size 3, and size 1 (largest). To confuse matters, the samples in the second photo are, from left to right, size 1 (largest), size 3, and size 2.
