The Surprise Concept: What Unexpected Things Reveal About Us

Sometimes the unexpected isn't asking to be managed. Sometimes it's asking to be noticed.

Don’t Get It Twisted

Now that I am living in my answered prayer, why would I deviate from the path that led me here? 💅🏾

Pull up a chair. I have some advice to take, too. 🥂

Join me in The DreamGirl’s Journal on Substack as I spend the next few weeks taking my own advice, getting uncomfortable, and answering a few of your questions along the way.

Come talk to me. ✨
A Little Advice
I have been told I give great advice. Not outright, of course. But when someone's next behavior is based on what you've just told them, you kinda figure it out. In the spirit of my personal new year (my birthday was 8/4), I want to spend the next few weeks asking you to pull up a chair as I take my own advice and even answer some of your questions.

Some memories are meant to be treasured, not relived forever.

Looking back once felt like honoring my past. But healing changes you. Today, I wouldn’t make many of the same choices I did then.

And that is something to celebrate.

Because this woman deserves her own memories.
This Woman Deserves Her Own Memories
I've realized I'm not actually longing for the good old days. I'm grateful for them—but I don't want to live there. The woman I've become deserves memories that belong to this version of me.

I am not a therapist. I am just emotionally intelligent.

Or at least...that's what some people would assume after reading my work.

The truth is more complicated.

I Have a Confession: I Forgot I Was Protected

Healing doesn't only ask us to release pain. Sometimes it asks us to release the habits that kept us alive while we were hurting. Turns out, God doesn't need His passenger princess backseat driving. 🙄💅🏾✨

Sometimes healing looks like dancing in your kitchen before sunrise, thanking God for a life you once only imagined. This is a reflection on forgiveness, growth, and learning to embrace the beautiful duality of being deeply content while still dreaming of what's next.

Honoring my rhythm is part of becoming the person I want to be.

No emergency required. 🤍

I think healing is sometimes just returning to yourself in smaller, quieter ways.

Not becoming someone new.
Not reinventing your entire life.

Just finally hearing yourself again.

You Don’t Have to Reinvent Yourself to Change Your Life
You don’t have to reinvent yourself to make real change. Sometimes, a single small shift—like bringing your gym clothes to work—can set off a ripple effect. What gentle adjustment could you make today?

A year ago today, I was challenged by a Christian leader to seek God intentionally through prayer and revisit those prayers at specific intervals: 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months later. Being the obedient (insert an Ashley giggle here 😉) woman that I am, I accepted the challenge and wrote down exactly what I desired to see unfold in each season.

The most striking difference between living in your shadow versus living in the light is the clarity of mind it brings… Just because I can operate at a high pace doesn’t mean I should. Not all problems require a superhero.
Living Beyond the Shadow
Living in darkness casts a shadow over who you are and what you do. Instead of wielding authority over it, you become defined by it, limited to seeing only the negative. This perspective shrinks your sense of self, letting darkness expand. Watching your shadow grow, you may mistake it for your true self. Convinced you’re doing fine, you can be blinded by darkness—unaware of how it harms your relationships, delays professional growth, and derails your good intentions.

You’re not supposed to build furniture in a hallway. Walk with me through this in-between moment in my latest entry, “In-Between Balance.”
In-Between Balance
This is a weird space I am in. I am not familiar with this in-between. I am not unhappy, but I can’t find excitement. It's as if I am making my way by feeling around on the walls while I place one foot in front of the other on the edge of a mountainous cliff.  I have been prone to extremes, so maybe that is why this kind of balance feels empty.

Abundance doesn’t arrive all at once—it teaches you how to breathe while you’re still unlearning anxiety. These are the moments where faith looks less like certainty and more like choosing anyway. No steering wheel on the ark. Just courage, obedience, and grace meeting me mid-journey.
No Steering Wheel on the Ark
The post addresses the challenges of unlearning anxiety and embracing personal growth. It emphasizes the frustration of confronting past behaviors while highlighting the importance of healing through determination and vulnerability.

Time didn’t heal my trauma. A decision did. Healing requires motion—not avoidance you’re calling maturity. This reflection is honest, heavy, and necessary. Read when you’re ready.
On Healing, Not Time
Time doesn’t heal trauma—it only measures how long you’ve lived with it. Healing requires motion, not avoidance dressed up as maturity. Acceptance doesn’t arrive on its own; it’s chosen.

Some seasons ask for silence.
Some ask for boundaries.
Some ask for growth.
This one just respects bloom. 🌿✨
Boundaries, Silence, and the Woman Blooming
Some seasons ask for silence. Some ask for boundaries. Some ask for growth. This one respects the bloom. I’ve been learning how stillness, presence, and clear boundaries shape the woman I’m becoming—and how internal expansion often precedes the blessings we’re waiting for.

I’ve learned that leaving isn’t always loss. Sometimes it’s alignment. Sometimes it’s trust. Sometimes it’s divine authorship—God holding the pen, me learning how to grow.
Running Toward My Own Life
The author reflects on the misconception of leaving as escape, asserting that their departure is not about fleeing but about seeking fulfillment and personal growth. They emphasize the importance of individuality, accountability, and the journey toward a meaningful life, framing their experience as divine authorship rather than abandonment.

Some decisions aren’t about outcomes — they’re about alignment. I found myself choosing clarity over obligation, trusting God’s work in me, and finally letting the decision be mine. Ordinary on the surface. Miraculous in truth.
When the Decision Became Mine
There was a time when every major decision I made passed through a committee before it ever reached God. Family. Employers. Mentors. Circumstances disguised as “wisdom.” Recently, I found myself at another crossroads — one familiar, one uncertain. The familiar asked for endurance. The uncertain asked for trust. For the first time, I didn’t ask anyone what I should do. I didn’t negotiate my peace or explain myself into exhaustion.

I just realized something wild: my “trust issues” were actually faith issues in disguise.

When you stop trusting yourself, it’s hard to trust what God placed in you. And suddenly manifestation starts feeling like a performance instead of a partnership.

Read what happens when trust is restored👇🏾
Faith, Manifestation, and the Confidence to Believe Again
I used to think my trust issues lived in a separate room from my faith. Turns out, they were the same conversation—just spoken in two different tones.

Recently, I noticed how often our presence is expected but not always understood. I wrote a short reflection about that — from the calm knowing that comes when you choose awareness over reaction.

If this resonates, you can read the full piece on Substack 👇🏾
The Price of Presence (Revisited)
Some days remind you of the weight you carry — the history in your bones, the wisdom in your work, the steadiness you bring even when the world feels unsteady around you. Recently, I found myself noticing how often our presence is expected but not always understood. How easily people rely on the depth we offer without pausing to consider the cost of carrying that depth.

A soft shift is happening in me—an exchange of the heavy piece I’ve carried for the peaceful one God always intended. This reflection traces that moment of release, the weightlessness of obedience, and the surprising ease that comes with finally letting grace lead.
