TJ Klune called it on Michael Bay in 2019
Martin Handle, an old guy who lived off in the middle of the woods, came in at ten that morn-ing, and Gus was so surprised to see him that he almost told Martin to get the fuck out. Thankfully, Gus remembered the customer was number one!!! and was able to give a twitch of a smile that, if Mr. Handle's wide-eyed reaction had anything to say about, came across as more of a I'm-thinking-about-bathing-in-your-blood sort of grimace. Mr. Handle rented All About Eve and Gone in Sixty Seconds, and Gus wasn't even in enough of a right mind to mock him silently for that last, given that Michael Bay's films were the tumor on the skin of filmmaking. "Don't call me dude," Gus reprimanded. "You are twenty-three years old. Speak like it, oh my god." "Gus loves alliteration," Casey told his friends. "He's alliterative all the time." "I am not!" Gus said. "You just literally lied a lot. Dammit." "Ask him what he thinks about Michael Bay," Casey said to Josiah. "What do you think about Michael Bay?" Josiah asked. "That rat bastard ruins dreams and is an abomination—" "His ferret is named Harry S. Truman." "His what is named what?" Serge said. "He reads encyclopedias, wears retro Hawaiian shirts, is sarcastic as shit, wants to have an ironic bongo band called Bleeding Jesus, and used to smoke weed with his dad." "Dude," Josiah said. "You're a hipster."

Gift article: 77 mind-blowing facts this year

Freud was a real one
11. California grizzly bears are mostly vegan, but over time, humans have made them more carnivorous. 12.A tick bite can make you allergic to mammalian meat-so much so that some ranchers are becoming allergic to their own cattle. 13. When some people took a drug originally approved to treat asthma, their food allergies also started disappearing. 14. Brains have a consistency not unlike tapioca pudding. 15. The weight of giant pumpkins increased 20-fold in half a century. 19.In the Middle Ages, people took their pet squirrels for walks and decked them out in flashy accessories. 20. You can buy a fitness tracker for your pet. 21. Humankind has basically reached the limit of airplane-overhead-bin space. 22. Study-abroad accents might be real. 23. Each clan of sperm whales uses its own set of clicking sounds to communicate. Some of these sounds may be older than Sanskrit. 50.Air conditioners' MONEY-SAVER mode is a lie. 51.By 2040, as few as 10 countries will have enough snow to host the Winter Olympics. 52. Dogs may be entering a new wave of domestication. 53. And the domestication they've already undergone may have led them to bark more. 54.Elephants and parrots use namelike calls that identify them as individuals. Whales and bats might too. 55. Sigmund Freud said he put his patients on the couch because he could not deal "with being stared at by other people for eight hours a day." 66. Some scientists believe that multicellular life may have arisen thanks to enormous mountain ranges. 67.BRCA mutations, famously linked to breast cancer, can also lead to cancer in the pancreas and prostate. 68.A dentist found a hominin jawbone in a floor tile of his parents' newly renovated house. 69. Chewing gum became a baseball standby in part because Philip Wrigley, the heir to the Wrigley Company, gave it to players in the Chicago Cubs clubhouse after he took over ownership of the team in 1932.

This I think is one of the more remarkable parts of this story
How We Reported This Story J. David McSwane obtained and reviewed thousands of pages of court documents and medical records. He also obtained text messages and work emails. He visited Helena, Montana, numerous times and interviewed dozens of former patients; current and former St. Peter's Hospital staff members; Dr. Thomas Weiner and his supporters. He tracked Weiner's years as director of the hospital's Cancer Treatment Center and his practice by cross-referencing those records with witness accounts. He identified more than 100 cases in which St. Peter's staff had expressed some level of concern. He met with the families of patients who died under Weiner's care and, in several instances, obtained HIPAA waivers so that Weiner and the hospital could speak about those cases. To get some sense of the scope of Weiner's practice, he and data reporter Haru Coryne analyzed data published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; they looked at billing data in the Medicare Part B program and prescribing data in the Medicare Part D program from 2013 to 2020. They shared their analysis with a data expert and CMS, which did not respond to questions. Research reporter Mollie Simon helped McSwane identify Nadine Long and provided archival material.

Longshoremen strike is over after 3 days, which can be summed up by two things:
The strike - which involved 45,000 workers across 36 ports, from Texas to Maine - was the first to hit the east and Gulf coast ports of the US since 1977. The tentative agreement is for a wage hike of around 62%, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. uncovered social media posts by David Adam, chair and CEO of USMX, that were staunchly critical of Democrats

The NYT article from last week says Asian-Americans are more likely to not report their race. Among the impacts of the SCOTUS decision are multiple incentives away from clean data.
Highlighted text: Many of the schools are reporting stagnation or decline in Asian American enrollment. He attributes that to the increase in students not reporting their race or ethnicity, which he suspects is happening mostly among Asian Americans. "Asian Americans know they're the target," he said.
