GOOD NEWS! Researchers have discovered a new antibiotic, known as manikomycin, that may be a bulwark in the fight against drug-resistant superbugs. By attacking the ribosome in a never-before-seen way, manikomycin can evade the existing mechanisms pathogens have developed to resist antibiotics.

#EDtipoftheweek : it takes 5—10 min for hydrogen peroxide to reduce pathogens on a plastic surface. Fanning with a bedsheet will not speed up the process. Let them cook.

#EDtipoftheweek : if you are taking methadone, you are not detoxing. You might be recovering from a drug abuse disorder but detox is a whole other beast.

#EDtipoftheweek : just because the cardiac monitor says a rhythm is afib doesn’t mean it is afib. Tonight it was a heart block.

I couldn’t see the rhythm long enough to discern which definitively - saw it on a station monitor not an ECG, but I think it was Mobitz 2.

Friendly yet firm reminder to get your MMR titer to check your immunity, and boost up if it’s waning.
Well then.

Measles was declared eliminated in 2000. But...

"More measles cases have been reported in the United States in the last two years than in all the years from 2000 through 2024 combined."

Thanks, RFK, JR.

#EDtipoftheweek : when a nurse says they need a witness they most definitely are not asking for you to clap your hands and shout “Testify!”

I found out today that not only is the ED still using my volunteer orientation SOP, I also snagged a regular Friday night shift! I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than be in the ED on a Friday night. Love bringing order to disorder however I can 💙

Nothing to do with medicine but this is your friendly reminder to tip your bartenders well.

Even at the fancy spots, these people are working as hard as anyone and they are not getting their due. Month straight of no day off, bad reviews if they state boundaries. We can be kinder, do better

My version of Dunning-Kruger effect is watching a surgeon suture a singular kernel of corn and knowing, with 100% certainty, that I could learn to do that by the end of this summer.

Drew a patient today on her 3rd pregnancy; I asked if she was doing anything special for valentine’s. “No, every day is valentine’s day for my husband and I” was her cheesy response but it gave me the warm fuzzies too 🥰

Except that one person and that one thing. The rest of it can fuck off. Especially ICE.

Today I learned I have a gift for hand draws in phlebotomy. Apparently so did my dad, a fact I didn’t know till today and which makes me feel closer to him. I wish I could ask him for tips on straight draws. I miss him so much, especially in times of connection.

My life is so different from 2 years ago. Then, I was traveling the world for work, making videos & websites. Now I have non-drug abuse track marks and hematomas and had a fake arm arrive at my house the other day.
