I barely spoke to my dad for seven years because of misophonia. I ate alone from age 10 to 18.

Now I sit at the same table. We eat together. It took a long time, and a lot of work, but we got there.

I was 18 or 19 when I found the word "misophonia." At university, late at night, searching for why sounds made me react the way they did.

One word. That's all it took to go from "something is wrong with me" to "oh. There are others."

I believed I was broken for most of my life. Broken because chewing made my chest tighten. Broken because breathing sounds sent me into fight or flight.

I wasn't broken. I had misophonia. And knowing that changed everything.

You are not broken either.

I used to explain it like an allergy.

You wouldn't tell someone allergic to peanuts to "just eat around them." The reaction isn't a preference. It's not a choice.

Same with sound. The body reacts. You don't get a vote.

"Just ignore it" is like telling someone to ignore a tornado in their living space.

The sound isn't background noise. It's the only thing your brain will let you focus on. Everything else disappears.

You can't ignore what your nervous system has flagged as a threat.

someone breathing quietly across the table hits harder than a construction site. if you know, you know. misophonia was never about volume. it's about what your brain decided to wire as danger.

Built a cereal box fort at 10 to block out the sound of my dad eating. That was 23 years ago.

I'm Jonty. I'm building Thriving With Misophonia. A community, course, and tools for people who feel sound differently. No quick fixes.
