🛵80 days around the Roman Empire". 🗓Day 5. Baetulo. Founded in around 100 BC, the Roman city of Baetulo is most famous for its baths. Wonderfully preserved, they are visible in their entirety. Some stunning mosaics are at the House of the Dolphins.

🛵80 days around the Roman Empire 🗓Day 4. We are in Be’er Sheva, near the largest city in the Negev desert. It is a UNESCO Heritage Site - it has impressive remains of antiquity. In Roman times, it was a defensive outpost of the Empire against the Nabataean Kingdom.

🛵"80 days around the Roman Empire". 🗓 Day 3. We stop at Antioch of Pisidia 🇹🇷, a great city visited by St Paul and by Hadrian. King Attalos bequeathed Antiochia to Rome in 133 BC. One of the three surviving copies of Augustus' Res Gestae was discovered in Antioch.

🛵 80 days around the Roman Empire. 🗓 Day 2 Today stop is Akragas. 🇮🇹 The splendid Temple of Concord in Agrigento owes its survival to the fact that it was chosen, during the late Roman imperial age, to become a Christian church dedicated to saints Peter & Paul.

🛵"80 days around the Roman Empire". 🗓 Day 1: Aizanoi. 🇹🇷 The main attraction here is the temple of Zeus. The structure still stands, made out of 16 intact columns and the central building’s perimeter wall. This temple is one of the better preserved ancient structures in Asia Minor.

🪔#OnThisDay 212 CE: Emperor #Caracalla murdered his co-emperor brother Geta, witnessed by their mother Julia Domna. The murder led to brutal damnatio memoriae - Geta's images were destroyed, his name erased, and mentioning him became lethal.

🪔 #ArtHistory In Sant'Apollinare Nuovo (Ravenna), a remarkable 565 CE mosaic depicts the Three Magi - the earliest known example where they're named as Balthassar, Melchior, and Caspar. They are shown as part of a larger procession moving toward the Madonna and Child.

🪔 This Roman measuring vessel (AD 90-91) from Carvoran fort (UK) shows how officials cheated locals. Marked as holding 17.5 sextarii of grain, it actually fits 20.8 - a sneaky way to collect extra tax!
