A lot of Montreal neighborhoods along the metro have "sneaky density." e.g., le Plateau Mont-Royal is one of the densest places in Canada but has relatively few buildings over 5 or even 3 stories. Just incredibly consistent application of 3-story buildings like these: maps.app.goo.gl/Ym5ak29YsQUr...

If the top 9% of students aren't prepared for undergraduate math, then I'm far more worried about the high schools than the universities

This is basically what happened in Minnesota after years of the DFL biding their time!

The most generous take on this is that if the Democrats ever regain control of all three houses (and with enough votes to sideline that year's Manchin figure), then it helps to have the agenda ready to go so they can hit the ground running in the brief window when passing laws is actually possible.

The flipside is that with an e-bike it also takes less effort to be courteous. It's less of a burden/inconvenience to slow down (for pedestrians/obstructions/stop lights/whatever) when it's easy to get back up to speed afterwards!

History suggests they may well get their trifecta but also that the urgency to act will evaporate as soon as the election results are in

100% agreed, I loved my old 5K iMac but was very very disappointed when the computer bit died and I was stuck discarding a great monitor along with it.

A few years ago FIFA decided there were too many goals in the sport and invented a way to take some away retroactively on technicalities

In North America, BRT gets selected as a mode precisely *for* its ability to disappear where it's needed most. It gives the impression of a big infrastructure project but allows avoiding hard choices about tradeoffs at chokepoints by forcing the buses back into mixed traffic

A quietly revolutionary thing a presidential candidate could do would be to promise any hypothetical SCOTUS nominees during their term would have a law degree from a public university

Also state and local governments! They can't directly regulate vehicles like the feds, but they have lots of powers in licensing, registration, sales taxes, etc. that could be deployed in service of this problem.

"We should really add some kind of civic holiday in August"

"Perfect, I've added Civic Holiday to the calendar"

"Wait what?"
June 19, 2026 at 4:03 PM
In Quebec we always get two national holidays a week apart (Quebec's on the 24th and Canada's on July 1st). This year they both fall on Wednesdays and let me tell you, it stinks. Nobody knows what to do with it. Work four two-day chunks? Burn a ton of PTO to get a weird Wednesday–Wednesday week off?

It is actually nuts to me that no elected Dem has taken "your phones, computers, and games consoles are all skyrocketing in price due to Trump and Musk" and run with it. Two years from now they'll all be panicking about how to appeal to twentysomething men!

Yeah that's fully fair (and also there are voters for PQ and QS who oppose independence or holding a referendum).

My point was simply how the referendum context is way less favorable than the electoral context, given equal levels of support.
January 26, 2026 at 8:47 PM
Average PQ support in election polls: 35%
Average support for independence in polls: 34%

(from qc125.com)

It's literally the exact same level of support in both cases, it's just that 35% (in the right distribution) gets you a huge legislative majority in Quebec
