It's an insane policy to dump 1200 men, regardless of origin, together on the outskirts of a village. It all stems from not allowing asylum seekers to work and therefore rent homes, integrate etc. Obviously racism is also hugely at play, but this is making things so much worse.

Very few people know that Marvin Gaye also wrote a classic song here, Can I Get To Widnes?
[1975] Parkinson - Paul Simon sings Homeward Bound live in the studio. Simon wrote the song during his time in England, possibly while waiting for a train at Widnes railway station.

Very sad news of a variety becoming all too frequent. RIP
So sad to hear of the death of Bonnie Greer, novelist, broadcaster and hugely inspiration woman.
She was a great supporter of this Womensart project & WA books and our chats will be cherished always. A true intellectual & beautiful person. RIP xx

Historian, author, songwriter, poet, humourist, man-about-town, lexicologist, Society of Antiquaries stalwart, President of Newcastle upon Tyne's Lit & Phil and a canny bit besides, Oliver Heslop was the Toon’s Victorian culture vulture, now sadly all but forgotten. Or he was! New book out October 8

Bring back lead pars that grab the reader with ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’ and ‘when’, before cracking on with ‘why’ and elaborating further from paragraph two. Thank you and good night.
