[TowProfessional]Jump Starters, Modern Batteries, And Roadside Best Practices
Battery calls used to be simple. Now you can roll up on a roadside jump start and find AGM, EFB start stop batteries, spiral wound designs, or even lithium iron phosphate, all tied into smarter charging systems that watch current flow and react to what they think just happened. That’s why we brought on Jim O’Hara, EVP of Merchandising at Clore Automotive, to give tow operators a clear, practical playbook for modern battery service calls. We get specific about what matters most in the field: the difference between jump starting and charging. Jim explains why jump starting a 12-volt vehicle is largely chemistry-agnostic, while charging is absolutely not. We talk voltage windows, why lithium batteries are sensitive to overvoltage, and how smart battery chargers with the right profiles help protect battery health and extend service life. If you’re choosing a jump starter, booster pack, or charger for a towing and recovery operation, this is the kind of detail that prevents expensive mistakes. We also dig into the real-world connection practices that can keep you safer and keep the vehicle happier. Jim shares why the negative clamp should go to a solid engine or chassis ground, not directly to the negative battery post, not only to reduce spark risk near hydrogen gas but also to avoid confusing modern battery sensors that can trigger codes or drivability issues. From there we cover how to maintain your jump starter investment with “charge early, charge often,” what to watch for in clamps and cables, and the safety habits that matter when you’re working around belts, fan blades, and energy-dense lithium packs. To round it out, we talk battery diagnostics for tow pros: why classic load testers can struggle when the battery is discharged, and why digital battery testers are often the best choice for quick, accurate triage of the battery, starting system, and charging system on scene. Subscribe for more towing and recovery training, share this with a coworker, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway.

TRAA "Legislative Update"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TRAA MEMBER ALERT: "LEGISLATIVE UPDATE" Towing and Recovery Association of America Applauds Introduction of Legislation to Address Uniform Safety Protocols for Roadside EV Fire Response May 4, 2026 -- The Towing and Recovery Association of America (TRAA), the national voice of the towing and recovery industry, hailed the introduction of the bipartisan, bicameral Responder and Recovery Safety in EV Fires Act, legislation marking a significant step forward in establishing essential standardized protocols and safety measures for towing operators nationwide. The Responder and Recovery Safety in EV Fires Act, sponsored by Senators Tim Sheehy (R-MT) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Representatives Jay Obernolte (R-CA-23) and Suzan DelBene (D-WA-01), would establish a coordinated, expert-driven federal effort to improve roadside electric vehicle (EV) fire response, strengthen responder safety, and ensure that best practices keep pace with rapidly changing vehicle technologies amid increased EV adoption. In order to accomplish this, the legislation would require the Secretary of Transportation to convene a multidisciplinary working group composed of experts directly involved in roadside EV fire response, including: · Towing and recovery professionals, who are frequently directed to clear EVs from active roadways following fires or crashes · Fire service and emergency response personnel, including both career and volunteer responders · Research, training, and standards organizations with expertise in EV fire risks and response · Federal safety agencies, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) · Manufacturers of electric vehicles and EV batteries “As EV technology evolves, it’s critical we ensure our safety protocols evolve with it,” Sheehey said. “This legislation takes a commonsense, bipartisan approach to bringing experts together, closing critical gaps, and making sure the heroic men and women responding to these incidents can do their jobs safely and effectively.” “First responders deserve the strongest possible protections that keep them safe on the job and help them better protect our communities,” Wyden said. “I’m grateful for the Towing and Recovery Association of America’s support for our bipartisan legislation that prioritizes the needs and safety of first responders and our communities as our country transitions into new technologies that pose new challenges.” “Electric vehicle technology is evolving rapidly, but our safety protocols have not kept pace,” said Obernolte. “This bipartisan legislation brings together the experts who are on the front lines, from tow operators to first responders, to develop clear, consistent guidance that will help keep them safe. By improving coordination and sharing best practices, we can better protect those who respond to these dangerous incidents while ensuring our infrastructure adapts to emerging technologies.” “Electric vehicles are a popular, greener mode of transportation across Washington,” said DelBene. “However, there is a lack of standard safety protocol for first responders when extinguishing electric vehicle fires, which creates unnecessary risk of injury and long-term health effects. This bipartisan, bicameral bill will make our first responders safer as they respond to electric vehicle emergencies.” "Increased EV adoption has outpaced current safety protocols for the towing industry, and it is critical that we create and maintain guidelines that are able to keep pace with emerging technologies," said TRAA Executive Director, Bruce Bender. “Today, data and guidanceis fragmented and inconsistent, best practices vary widely across jurisdictions, and lessons learned from incidents are often not systematically shared. Tow operators face heightened risks without consistent, nationally informed guidance to ensure safe towing and recovery operations of the impacted vehicles. This legislation addresses those gaps by creating a central forum for collaboration, information sharing, and continuous improvement—without imposing mandates or new requirements on manufacturers, states, or local responders. We are grateful to Senators Sheehey and Wyden and Representatives Obernolte and DelBene for their leadership on and dedication to this issue and look forward to working with them to get this bill across the finish line.” About TRAA The Towing and Recovery Association of America, Inc.® (TRAA) is the national “voice of America’s towing industry.” TRAA represents towing and recovery professionals at the federal level, promotes safety, education, and professionalism, and advocates on behalf of the industry’s interests across the United States. TRAA is committed to strengthening and advancing the towing and recovery industry through leadership, advocacy, networking, and certification. GV Towing sues city of Hardin (MT)
GV Towing sues city of Hardin, former police chief over removal from tow rotation https://youtu.be/G4I4VUGzx3k?si=0WEXc6ISHanZdNLG HARDIN - GV Towing, LLC and its owner claim the city violated their civil rights after being removed from the police tow rotation following a complaint against the former chief. GV Towing has sued the city of Hardin and its former police chief after the company was removed from the police tow rotation list. The attorney for GV Towing and owner Laurie Tschetter says the city violated his client's civil rights. Hardin police have not called on GV Towing for about the last year. "Rotation calls from law enforcement are an important part of any tow truck business," said Matthew Monforton, Tschetter's attorney. Monforton says Tschetter once called the sheriff's office for law enforcement help — something many in Hardin have done for years because there often was not a police department. "Chief George was very angry, was offended, and was very rude to her, and as a result, she had to file a complaint against him based on the fact that she was so shaken by his behavior," Monforton said. "And unfortunately, the chief of police retaliated by trying to destroy her business by taking her off the tow rotation list." The lawsuit names the city of Hardin and former police chief Paul George, Jr. as defendants. Court documents state that George entered Tschetter's office and berated her for contacting the sheriff's department rather than HPD. Shetter objected to the chief's response. "We have a police chief who retaliated against Ms. Tschetter based on her First Amendment right to file a protest against him." Q2 contacted Chief George by email, and could not make contact with him by phone at his new job in Bullhead City, Arizona. Montforton says Tschetter has also appealed to the city council, but the council voted 3 to 2 in approval of George's action. "Ms. Tschetter has repeatedly requested that the city council put her company back on the tow rotation list, and the city council has repeatedly rejected those requests," Monforton said. Monforton says Shetter has been denied her free speech rights to protest against the former chief and denied due process rights. When asked for a response, City Attorney Jordan Knudsen said, "no comment." RESOURCE LINK
