This map has a single point.

A point representing the story of my Grandfather, Leonard Laband, M.S.M. One name, one life & a place - Leicester.

Over the next 20 weeks, the Trench project really begins - connecting names, places, & telling people's stories

One at a time

.
We have two data sets; only one man appears on both.

Both L&NWR
1. Crewe gave Date of Death & Regiment
2. Roll 3642 general detail

Sometimes the most interesting discoveries of a record is not what it tells us on its own...

The value is greater when the records are connected.

I find these type of ephemera to be so interesting! They really tell the story of the war and the impact on communities. Thanks for the share.

Died of Wounds in December 1914

One of 8 men recorded on what was called a "War Service Record".

Produced for the L. & N. W. R. Drawing Office at Crewe; perhaps this postcard existed for one reason.

To remember!

Albeit ephemera, the postcard survives & so do their names.

Do you live here?

In 1914, where you lived often influenced which regiment you were most likely to join.

This map shows the recruiting grounds of the British Army and Territorial Force during the Great War.

Which regiment covered your area?

Sometimes a postcard is more than just a postcard.

The original memorial may no longer survive. But this postcard does.

More than a century later, the postcard remains.

And so do their names.

The map posted last week... One name, one life, one story. Leonard.

But Leonard was not alone.

Behind every name on this page, and every page like it was a person.

A colleague.
A friend.
A family member.

This is what Trench is about.

One name at a time.
