In 2005, when the ratio of students to tenure-track faculty was 25.5 to 1, the UC promised to not let it go further. Today, the ratio is 29.6:1. ucfaculty.org/hire-more-fa...
The UC broke its promise to protect the student-faculty ratio. “The University must return to paying competitive salaries and paying faculty merits; the University will not permit the student-faculty ratio to deteriorate further... The University will not further risk the quality of the institution.” — University of California Budget for Current Operations 2004- 2005, P. 10 In 2005, when the student-faculty ratio was 25.5 to 1, UC promised that they would not let that number deteriorate further. Twenty years later, it is now 29.6 to 1. Meanwhile, senior administrators have more than doubled. We’re calling on the UC to Hire More Faculty. Sign the petition at ucfaculty.org

In the last few years, faculty have united across campuses through their faculty associations to win monumental change systemwide. We thought it was only right that our name reflect this growing collective power.

UCFA: We changed our name! When the Council of UC Faculty Associations (CUCFA) was founded in 1974, it was a council: a coordinating body linking ten independent campus associations, each doing its own work. But the last few years have made something else out of us. When the federal government began targeting the UC, faculty did not respond campus by campus. We responded together, systemwide.  So: CUCFA is now UCFA – the UC Faculty Association. A united front across the ten campuses of the faculty, by the faculty, and for the faculty.

If colleges and universities are to truly serve the public good, they should not be made answerable to the political program of a particular administration. UCFA & its associated campus chapters urge the UC to reject Compact 2.0. cucfa.org/statement-on...
Faculty call on UC leaders to reject Trump administration's higher education compact. We’re joining AAUP and AFT in calling for higher education administrations and governing boards to reject Compact 2.0. The compact asks universities to align themselves with a far-right agenda and agreeing to it would betray UC’s education and research mission and would compromise faculty’s ability to serve California.

Thanks to the advocacy of hundreds of faculty who joined the fight through their Faculty Associations, the $7.5B California Research Fund (SB 895) is now headed to the 2028 ballot where this funding decision will be in the hands of California voters.

This year, FAs successfully defended trans care, HIV research, and community health programs at the UC from feds' illegal attacks. Yet, political interference in higher ed continues, shuttering programs and censoring what we teach. As we celebrate Pride, we must remember that the fight continues.

We fight back!
The Regents now have to decide if they will surrender to the Trump administration’s demands. As workers who have fought for academic freedom, equity in the workplace, and economic justice, we urge the Regents to refuse any compromise that undermines our values and puts workers at risk... instead of continuing the historical trajectory of declining per-student funding, it is time for the state of California to stand its ground, for Newsom to double down on his fight against Trump’s regime, and for the legislature to increase funding to the UC to support the vital role it plays in millions of Californian lives and livelihoods.

On Friday August 8, the Trump administration demanded a $1 billion “settlement” from UCLA after freezing $584 million in federal grants for vital scientific and health research. The proposed $1 billion agreement would be the largest settlement since Trump began extorting universities, and marks the first attempt of the federal government to ransom payment from a public university. These attacks have been waged under the guise of fighting antisemitism and investigating alleged Title VII violations, but we see them for what they are: an attempt to cripple public higher education in the nation’s premier public university system.
