In 1927, Nikolai Bukharin (c) Alexei Rykov (L) and Mikhail Tomsky (R) were some of the most influential men in the Soviet Union.

By 1929, their political position was collapsing.

By 1930 all three men had been removed from their positions in the Communist Party.

By 1928, Stalin and Bukharin increasingly represented two different visions of the Soviet future.

BUKHARIN wanted to continue the NEP.
STALIN called for an acceleration of industrialization.

In 1927, grain quotas were missed by more than 2 million tons.

Stalin concluded that the peasants were withholding grain in expectation of higher prices.

Bukharin saw things differently. His answer: give the peasant a reason to produce more. His message was: Enrich yourselves!
