Pawton Quoit: A Stone Age Enigma in Cornwall
Pawton Quoit is a magnificent portal dolmen built by Cornwall’s stone age inhabitants. The imposing megalith sits, mostly intact, atop a ridge overlooking a steep valley. The enormous capstone, which juts out incongruously against the landscape, must weigh at least 15 tonne, and perches on just three points of the supporting upright stones.

Carn Kenidjack known as the Hooting Carn where the wind whistling between the craggy outcrop of stones makes an unearthly sound. Local folklore tells of the devil appearing in the guise of a hooded rider hunting lost souls across the Penwith Moors.

Nine Maidens stone circle, Wendron. Sadly not intact with only four standing and two built into the field wall. Originally there were two circles here. #cornwall #standingstonesunday #bronzeage

She took the time to
#Nurture the small birds,
And told the bees
Of loss and joy...
She knew the seasons
By leaf and movement
Of moonlight and air -
Even as age
Bent her bones
She walked the
Hedgerows
Of memory,
Tending the broken things
Sheltering there.

One of Cornwall's most important stone circles, still in use ceremonially today. Personally I always feel nauseous and a little dizzy inside it.
Been a while since I posted anything for #StandingStoneSunday, bit remiss of me.

Something deeply troubling & shocking is happening at Exeter University*, where a mass cull of staff is planned, even though it's in surplus. No good justifications given. @jamesgdyke.info provides the details: www.technosphere.earth/the-bonfire-...
*Disclosure: I have a Visiting Fellowship here. +🧵
The bonfire of the humanities
150 academic posts at the University of Exeter are to be cut, most in the humanities but also in social sciences, engineering and environmental sciences

Wheal Maid - Goon Gumpus #cornwall #kernow A typical rugged vista in Cornwall's historic mining districts. The relics of Cornwall's mining past pepper a landscape formed from spoil heaps.

Piskey Hall, fogou. Not technically a standing stone, the Cornish fogou stands in a category all of its own. #Cornwall #StandingStoneSunday #prehistoric #megalithic #ancientsitesunday #sundaystonework @megalithic.bsky.social

Whatever you believe about crop circles, there's no doubt they bring people joy. (except the farmer 🫤) A sort of third space where you'll meet a diverse range of wonderful, interesting people.

A whopper for #StandingStoneSunday 😮 - of all the stone rows of Dartmoor, Drizzle Combe has some of the largest terminal stones

This stone is set at right angles to the row, with a prominent lug (head? Face?) at the top 🤔

An incredible Late Neo/Bronze Age complex 🤩

We cross the threshold of a stone circle and are engulfed by a sense of ongoing ritual. Engulfed by a sense of intimate lithic conversations, power dynamics unfolding across slow centuries. The Long Neolithic is palpable. The Long Neolithic is living. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday
