Ask your councillor, MLA, MP what they are doing on green issues Look out for UNISON’s Year of Green Activity political engagement opportunities. Think about joining local forums to influence green discussions. Explore or volunteer with environmental groups. Engage with global action events (e.g. COP events).

Turn lights, monitors, and devices off when not in use (“Switch Off Hour”). Encourage no-screen / fresh air breaks. Explore ways to make celebrations low-waste (e.g. reusable decorations instead of balloons). Volunteer to set up a workplace book exchange point.

Consider using volunteer days for environmental work. Join or start community gardening, tree planting, or wildflower projects. Join the Shed Movement or other local repair workshops. Create or promote workplace book exchanges or reuse points. Collect rainwater for watering plants. Work with colleagues or neighbours to “Green” small or unused spaces at work (e.g. planters, mini-gardens). Join litter-picking or local clean-ups. Plant trees or even ‘food forests’ where possible.

Follow the 4 R’s: Repair/Reuse/Recycle/Reduce. Buy or grow local food; support seasonal produce. Buy second-hand or organise clothes swaps. Try to use fewer plastic pens and less single-use packaging. Switch to sustainably packaged household and bathroom products (refills, bars, etc.). Switch to cheaper renewable energy tariffs. Change to ethical or green bank accounts.

Use public transport (and back UNISON’s campaign for better investment). Consider car-sharing or cycling to work. Campaign for a cycle-to-work scheme If you are able, consider walking to local meetings or try walking meetings with colleagues.

Use Ecosia instead of Google / AI for internet searches. Switch to Ecotalk or another ethical mobile provider (they can be cheaper!). Decide to find out more about ethical consuming and calculate your carbon footprint. Pledge to fly less . Reduce meat consumption (e.g. meat-free days) or share vegan recipes. Support “Take the Jump” or other lifestyle reduction campaigns

Remember to take a couple of minutes every day to look at the clouds and breathe! Organise or join wellbeing nature activities, even in winter. Promote outdoor time and fresh air at work. Encourage eco-positive community activities that build morale and inclusion. Count bugs or plant wildflowers – get down and dirty with nature – it can bring lots of health benefits
