Early bicycle racers draped tubular tires around their shoulders in order to repair their own punctures on the road. These tires were known as "boyaux" or "sew-ups," and were glued directly onto the rim, unlike modern clincher tires with separate inner tubes.

This was found on the flickr page of Walter Vermeulen: 1911 TDFI Léon Valloton and Alfons Lauwers "Le 2e TOUR DE FRANCE des Independents" September 3 - Stage 16 Laval-Paris, 266 km. Stage winner Léon Valloton (GC 3rd, 99 points) and second Alfons Lauwers (GC 5th, 187 points) completed this stage in 10 hours 26 minutes. Lauwers was beaten in the sprint by one bicycle length. Philippe Thys followed at 14 minutes. LEON VALLOTON (1885-1956) was a Swiss rider and his greatest success was in 1909 when he won Paris-Caen. ALFONS LAUWERS (1885-1964) was a Belgian cyclist. In 1912 he became first in the National Championship of the Independents*. The 'Tour de France des Indépendants'*, also known as the 'Tour de France Peugeot-Wolber', was a bicycle race organized between August 4 and September 3, 1911. There were 300 participants at the start. There were 16 stages over a distance of 4500 km. 97 riders would finish this TDFi. This second edition** in 1911 was won by Philippe Thys with 75 points. This 'independent'* adventure would not last long and disappeared before the Great War, with a last edition in 1911. *Independent - until the mid-1960s a rider who could compete in both amateur and professional competitions. He was therefore also able to win cash prizes, where amateurs still had to make do with vouchers and prizes in kind. **The first edition in 1910 was won by a certain René Guénot.
