My profession today can see as far as it does because its practitioners stand on Margaret Hamilton's shoulders. May her memory be a blessing.

In the Biden administration, l led the team that developed what was arguably the first White House “AI safety” framework, the AI Bill of Rights.

David Robinson, author of this forthright and sobering essay about risk culture at OpenAI and in Silicon Valley was on that team.
New just now in The Atlantic:

David Robinson resigned this week. He was among the longest-tenured employees at OpenAI—and oversaw safety reports on 12 frontier launches.

He is very worried: “The time for trial and error is over.”

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today.

A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field.

Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission.

The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

Four people were aboard the single-engine plane when it went down in a cornfield near Carvers School Road in East Troy at about 1:30 p.m.

I'd wager Tommy Tuberville would fail each and every one of the written and practical tests that every single airline pilot, flight attendant and air traffic controller has passed.
Tommy Tuberville: Many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community. It's terrifying.

No magic tool can make up for a chronic lack of qualified air traffic controllers. No magic tool makes it possible to fly through a line of thunderstorms that is hammering an entire region.

Roger Marshall is, and has been, the worst.
"Marshall, a Republican seeking re-election this fall, filed lawsuits against more than 700 patients with outstanding bills ... Marshall's lawyers garnished patients’ paychecks and bank accounts. They routinely charged patients an 18% annual interest rate."
