I'm one of those who went from "Oh yay I'm charmed by this magical British boarding school!" to being unwilling to touch this person or anything she makes with a poison-dipped pole, and I know I'm not alone.

Ahhh, here we go, THIS is what I've been trying to explain. I still have a LOT of friends I made through the fandom, but we've discovered OTHER things we have in common and/or just plain like about each other and we don't need the books anymore. Yes, I do miss the camaraderie, but that's about all.
The reason that the Harry Potter apologists won't just read better books is because they're not looking for good stories...if they were, they wouldn't have glommed on to Harry Potter. They're looking for the camaraderie and social phenomenon that Harry Potter was in the 2000s.

The distracted driving discourse is already popping off but I’d just like to throw in: I’ve been an insurance adjuster for almost 13 years. When I started, we almost never saw high speed rear end impacts. Now they’re like the most common type of claim. It’s distractions, this is obvious.

I do say "oh my gods" as a kind of general "eff this" to organized religion in general. Decided one day that if I was really going to reject the whole system, I should go for it. 🤷♀️ I also swap languages to swear when I'm around people I "shouldn't" swear in front of (students, niblings, etc.).
I gave up and just instituted a rule that people were allowed to say “oh my god” in a pantheistic society because “oh my gods” just hits my ear wrong.

I was the kid who would read ANYTHING - toothpaste tubes, cereal boxes, packaging for literally any damn thing at all - and the other day I was shopping at a Japanese store and I couldn't read the packages. This was... unacceptable. 1/2

We have covered the windows with cardboard, spare fabric, curtains, and shades. It probably looks like a flophouse from outside but the temperature in the hallway dropped from 88 to 85 so that's a win. 🥵 (Yes, we have window units in the bedrooms but even those are only down to 80. GAH.)
