I tried to identify this growth on a floating piece of seagrass for a while, and finaly iNaturalist helped. Turns out it's discolored red algae called seagrass laver, Smithora naiadum. Victoria, British Columbia.

My friend and I tried a drift snork through Bashakill NWR Saturday night. The plan was to float 3.5 miles down Basher Kill, but the river proved too slow and overgrown so we only snorkeled 2 sections. Got just one lousy photo but it was a beautiful fish: juvenile ocellated bowfin (Amia ocellicauda).

The rich are more likely to lie and cheat: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

There are probably 10 times more species of parasitic wasps than parasitic flies. Yet flies evolved to use vertebrates as hosts multiple times, but wasps never did. Why? It would be so much fun.

Rabies in fur seals: www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2026...
I've only been bitten by a marine mammal once, many years ago. It was a harp seal; I didn't even think about rabies shots but perhaps I should have.
Rabid seals bite at least 176 people as fatal disease spreads, threatening other species
At least 176 people have been bitten by Cape fur seals during the marine rabies outbreak along the western and southern coast of South Africa. Scientists warn that the disease is now endemic to this s...

So Netanyahu knew about October 7 in advance and decided to let it happen, likely expecting the same popularity boost Bush got after 9/11. I wonder if European leaders are inviting Russian attack for the same reason.

In the 1930s the Nazis came to power without ever winning the elections.
Almost a century later, they might win them.
By permitting the rushed German unification, Gorbachev left a time bomb that's going off now. Merkel, then the Nazis. Germany will be paying for its mistake for generations to come.

Al-Jazeera English used to be one of the most interesting media sources online (as opposed to AJ Arabic, a cheap propaganda rag). That's no longer the case, but sometimes they do publish interesting stuff. www.aljazeera.com/opinions/202...
Kais Saied’s economic experiment has failed Tunisia
Saied’s promised path to self-reliance has deepened Tunisia’s economic crisis rather than resolving it.

One word I think should be incorporated into English is "sel". A Turkic word descending from Arabic "sayl", used in many parts of Asia for catastrophic flash floods of mud, water & rocks. More precise than anything existing in English, just like "tsunami" was a huge improvement over "tidal wave".

More than 1/2 of bird feathers I find around my house are iridescent wing feathers of blue jays. Why? Not because they're easy to spot: the jays' tail feathers & feathers of red cardinals are as bright plus we have w-peckers, crows, robins etc. Could jays leave them in the open as territory markers?

In the time I've lived in USA we've lost 2 wars, had 2 pandemics, a still-unfolding climate catastrophe, a major recession, a rule of law collapse, and a coup by a fascist party led by a Russian spy. Nothing caused billionaire-owned media to panic like the rise of Democratic Socialists does. (1/2)

I often see common snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) when I snorkel, and just can't resist photographing them. One thing I learned about them is that they are equally at home in stagnant swamps and fast, clear hill streams.

Aerial views of Great Salt Lake, a unique ecosystem critically important for migratory birds. Located in a Republican state, it is rapidly going the way of the Aral Sea. Once it dries out, salt and toxic chemicals carried by winds from the lakebed will make much of Utah unlivable.

Took the kids to see The Odyssey movie. 4/10. Everything's very professional but it's a 21st century superhero movie that has nothing to do with Homer's epic, and I don't like superhero movies. The script gets really bad sometimes (at one point Odysseus discusses the effects... (1/2)
